1909-1911 T206 PSA Authentic Honus Wagner at Auction

Written by Monte Jennings | Oct 20, 2021 12:24:12 AM

The holy grail of baseball cards, a 1909-1911 T206 Honus Wagner, is coming to auction in a rare sale.  The hobby's most valuable card is estimated to reach two million dollars when the hammer drops!

Have you ever dreamed about owning a T206 Honus Wagner?  We have, too! Given the scarcity of the card, the opportunities to own the "Holy Grail" of baseball cards are few and far between.  If this card has been on your radar, you now have the chance to bid on one thanks to SCP Auctions.  If the price tag isn't in your budget, just spend a second looking at this rare beauty!

THE HOLY GRAIL OF CARDS

The Honus Wager card is part of the T206 Tobacco set. From 1909 to 1911, these baseball cards were distributed into various brands of tobacco.  Think of how you collected cards from the 1950's -1990's when a stick of gum came with the packs. Before the gum, cards were part of ads to sell tobacco!

For unknown reasons, Wagner did NOT want his card produced in the set. Perhaps trying to prevent kids from using tobacco, or a contract dispute over compensation between he and the American Tobacco Company are the two top theories. Printing of the Wagner card came to a halt, leaving the hobby with fewer than 100 cards known to exist.

Since 1933, every record-breaking sale of a sports card has typically been the T206 Honus Wagner.  A copy of this card graded SGC 3 is the current-record holder with a sale price of 6.6 million dollars! You can see that card HERE

PSA AUTHENTIC HONUS WAGNER

The Wagner coming to auction is graded Authentic by PSA. If you're not familiar with card grading, we have tips for you HERE. Rather than assigning a numerical grade, this card was deemed simply Authentic by PSA.  Of the fewer than 100 copies known, 35 have been graded by PSA, including this Authentic copy.

It's not every day you even have a chance to see a Wagner!  The "Sweet Caporal" is the tobacco brand.  If you're wondering about the "restored" note on the label, this indicates that at some point, a person tried to do just that - restore the card. Restoring could mean coloring in part of the card that lost a little brightness over a century of time. Cards could be partially torn and taped or glued back together to "restore" the card, and sometimes a person may "trim" the card but cutting the edge of the card to make the corners sharp again.  Does the restoration bring the value of a card down?  Unlike vintage homes or cars, YES, the value drops a bit when it comes to sports cards - we recommend NOT doing that to your cards. However, when it comes to a T206 Wagner, collectors will still pay top dollar for a "restored" authentic card.  Just how much is a "restored" , Authentic Wagner?
