1951 Bowman Mickey Mantle Rookie SGC 9.5 May be the Best In the World

Stored in an original pack of 1951 Bowman baseball cards, this Mickey Mantle rookie card may be the best in the world! Leighton chats with the owner who made this stunning discovery.

Just Collect owner, Leighton Sheldon, stopped in his tracks while at the Dallas Card Show in New Jersey. A collector/dealer named Sean had always been on the hunt for a 1951 Bowman Mickey Mantle rookie card. From the day he started collecting, Sean was enamored with Mickey Mantle. The Mick won seven World Series championships with the New York Yankees, was named MVP three times, and etched his name into the Baseball Hall of Fame. In the mid 2000s, Sean met a person who was about to change his collection!

Sean states the gentlemen he knew said his father had a collection of cards. The dad was getting ready to retire and wanted to sell his baseball cards. The story is that dad had complete sets going back to the 1940's. Arrangements were made and Sean went to the dad's condo.

While going through all of the sets, a shoebox of cards came out with original packs of 1951 Bowman baseball cards inside. The packs were opened, and as a kid, the dad placed all of the cards back into each pack after opening. The entire set was present and in the original packs!

When Sean got to the Mickey Mantle card, he couldn't believe the condition. As you know, condition is VERY important when determining the value of cards. When grading a card, even a change in just one number from a scale of 1 to 10 could change the value of a card by hundreds if not thousands of dollars. Sean bought the collection and eventually had the card graded!

After SGC graded the card, the result was 9.5 / 10! The highest-graded 1951 Bowman Mickey Mantle card ever graded by SGC!
