Remember getting a box of Milk Duds when you went trick-or-treating as a kid? Perhaps you saw a few boxes of these as an adult in the movie theatre concessions. After seeing these Milk Duds boxes, you'll want to go back to when you were a kid and tell yourself to save a few boxes!
In 1971, Milk Duds placed a baseball player on their boxes of candy. Each box was about 6" x 3" when emptied and flattened out. Some of baseball's greatest players found themselves these boxes including Hank Aaron and Roberto Clemente. You can also see perhaps the best all-around player in Willie Mays and phenomenal pitchers such as Jim Palmer and Tom Seaver gracing the boxes. A total of 69 boxes make up the set with numbers 1-32 sporting players from the American League and numbers 33-69 having the National League represented.
While not exactly a baseball "card", you could have opted to cut out the image that resembles a card from the box or, like Uncle Curtis did, keep the entire box! Recently, we flew out to meet Curtis and evaluate his collection of cards, memorabilia, rare premiums, and food-issued sets like these Milk Duds cards. The collection was so big, we paid $77,000 for it!
As you can imagine, few people probably kept their candy boxes after 50 + years so these boxes aren't exactly common. While most cut out the images, Uncle Curtis kept his boxes in-tact! You can see the boxes in our photos below.
