HISTORY MADE! After researching, we believe this is the first time a full wax box of 1972 Topps basketball cards have been opened live for you to watch. Plenty of pack-fresh cards from Hall of Famers and stars were pulled, and the top card of the night is a gorgeous Dr. J, Julius Erving rookie card! Watch hobby history with our sister company, Vintage Breaks.

Topps produced a 264-card set in '72, with the top card being # 195, Dr. J! Julius Erving did it all on court. Dr. J won the MVP award in both the NBA and the ABA. He won titles in both leagues. A winner of the Slam Dunk Contest and All-Star Game MVP, Dr. J was a walking highlight. Also in the set are legends like Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Adbul-Jabbar, Oscar Robertson, Pete Maravich, and more! Of the 264 cards in the set, there are 51 that feature a Hall of Famer. Our sister company, Vintage Breaks, offered spots in this wax box for their card breaks, and we were excited to watch!

After doing some research, we believe that nobody has ever filmed a break of a 1972 Topps basketball wax box before. The highlight of the night was when Vintage Breaks pulled this stunner:

Dr. J Rookie Card

There is the Doctor in his ABA Virginia Squires uniform, holding that familiar red, white, and blue ABA ball and about to score one of his many buckets. You can see this moment captured on our live stream as our owner, Leighton, opened up pack 10 for Chef Ted:

We checked the PSA pop report and there aren't many high-grade Dr. J rookies; we hope this one ups the count!

The box offered PLENTY of star power as we continued the break. The box had 24 packs and each pack had 10 cards. Here are some of the other highlights pulled and put straight into the card savers you see:

Vintage Breaks also pulled a Dr. J All-Star card, too; it looks so pretty next to the base:

Congrats to each of you that pulled a star card. The non-star cards are also pack-fresh, and ready for building a high-grade complete set. The colors are vibrant, the corners are sharp, and all look clean of gum!

These cards haven't seen the light of day since Mikey liked Life Cereal, The Godfather was in theatres, and Don McClean dropped American Pie. When you hold your 1972 Topps card in your hands, just think - gas was 36 cents per gallon when that card was made.

You can see the entire, historic break of all packs here:

If you like card breaks, Vintage Breaks offers products in all sports with a wide range of years. You can find packs from 1947 like the '47-66 Exhibits baseball pack to the brand new 2023 releases. You can even find breaks in non-sports like Garbage Pail Kids and Pokémon. Check our all of the breaks here:

We offer many ways to evaluate your cards other than using our website, too.

  • Travel to us

If you can make the trip here like the son from my hometown did for this collection- we can make a deal at the office. We once met a father-son duo that drove eight hours from Virginia to meet us to sell a Michael Jordan rookie card stored in Tupperware since 1986 - great read here

  • Come to a convention

We keep a LIST of the card shows we'll be attending.  Come stop by the Just Collect table and chat.

  • Meet in-person

If you have a valuable collection and want us to come to you, we'll hop on the next plane out. We recently took a trip to California to purchase a collection that included three Jackie Robinson 1948 Leaf rookie cards that you can read about here.

  • Meet in New York City

We have another location in New York you can meet us at; read all the information here.

  • SHIP your collection

If you choose to mail your cards for an appraisal, we will evaluate your cards for FREE still. If you choose not to sell the cards, we'll ship them back with shipping fees paid by us!  We can offer our FedEx account with 2-day shipping, fully insured, all covered by us. Simply contact the office to set up this option.

OUR BUYING PHILOSOPHY

We've run into a wide range of people and collections over the last 25 years. Although Just Collect is known for buying vintage sports cards and especially vintage baseball cards, we are also extremely interested in buying non-sports cards, too!
