1929 Kashin Publications cards including Babe Ruth have proudly been purchased by Just Collect. The amazing part of the story - the cards were still in the ORIGINAL BOX!
For 25 cents, a collector could have owned a Babe Ruth card in 1929! Kashin Publications produced a set of 101 total cards that were each released into four series. Officially titled R316 cards, Kashins are much larger than the average card size you see today. Each Kashin card is 3.5" x 4.5" while cards today are 2.5" x 3.5". The front of each card is a black and white image of a baseball player your grandparents may have seen in-action. A facsimile signature is also on the front of each card. The reverse of a Kashin is a blank back, making this set similar to 1947-66 Exhibits. The set contains several key names in baseball history such as Lou Gehrig, Mel Ott, Jimmie Foxx, Frank Frisch, and more. What makes the set desirable is the one key card you can pull from each box: EVERY BOX HAS a BABE RUTH!
If you have never collected a baseball card in your life, you probably know the name Babe Ruth. The Sultan of Swat hit more home runs than anyone in the American League in 12 different seasons! One year, Ruth had more home runs himself than entire teams had. Cards of the seven-time World Series champion was sought after as much in 1929 was they are today, and Kashin smartly put a Babe Ruth card in every box of the 1929 R316 set.
The four different series came in Orange, Blue, Coral, or Canary boxes. Aside from having an eye-catching color, the boxes came in pretty handy in 1929 in order to keep track of the set; players are listed on the back of the boxes! Since the cards are not numbered, collectors used the box to know which cards from the set they owned. These cards were released almost a Century ago - about 97 years. Imagine how much wear and tear a box would have over almost a hundred years! Is there anything you own that is in pristine condition that is even - let's say - 25 years? When we received an e-mail through our easy-to-use
Our acquisitions specialist, Dan, received the images and began an our evaluation process. The retail stores are focused on selling modern products and simply don't have the time or the knowledge to carefully evaluate vintage collections like this. This is where we are happy to help you! We have purchased thousands upon thousands of collections and bought and sold over 50 MILLION dollars in cards. Below, you can see the images we received.
In the first photo is the original box from 1929. The main cards in the box are Babe Ruth, Frank Frisch, Lloyd Waner, and Chuck Kline. Looking at the Ruth, we can't believe he finished 9th in MVP voting that season behind a .345 average, 46 home runs, and 145 RBI.
Photos of the 1929 Kashin Publications cards:
The Ruth may not grade well due to the paper loss on the front of the card. As you know, condition is VERY important when determining the value of a card. Using a grading scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being gem mint perfect, a change in a single grade could alter the value of a card by hundreds if not thousands of dollars. The Ruth missing paper on the front of the card lowers the value quite a bit, but this is still an original 1929 Babe Ruth that is valuable.
After the free appraisal by Dan, we made the owner of the cards a fair offer which they accepted. We then paid the owner how they wanted to be paid!
