Offered this week for your consideration is a 1952 Topps rookie card of Hall of Famer Ed Mathews professionally graded SGC 30. Belying the technically assigned grade, this exemplar presents far nicer. The final card of the inaugural Topps issue, this very tough high number card has always been subject to the rigors of being the last card rubber banded or damaged at the end of the set. This example presents with solid centering and a fantastic image with great color and registration. The reverse is clean and stain-free and there is no paper loss. It would present quite a challenge to find an example that looks as nice even a grade or two higher! Mathews, a member of baseball’s 500 homerun club, teamed with Henry Aaron to form one of the most devastating right handed/left handed power combinations in baseball history, combining to slug 863 Homeruns as a tandem with the Milwaukee and Atlanta Braves - more than Ruth and Gehrig hit while Yankees teammates! Eddie was inducted in to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1978 and passed away in 2001 at the age of 69.
