What's really cool about the collection is that he started collecting this set as a kid. Going to local shows and stores, he assembled a large majority of the set card by card. Then, over time as he got older, he started to upgrade some of those cards and got closer and closer to completing the set. And now today, he's just about done. Remarkable. You can tell that he had an eye for centering, buying only the best examples to put in his collection - which paid off for him in the end. Since this set has been with him for the vast majority of his life, there was bit of an emotional attachment to it, so letting go was hard. We tried to make the process as easy as possible for him.
So, after a quick phone call, he sent over the list of cards in the collection along with the grade (condition) each card was in. Since all the cards were graded, and he provided a complete list of the collection, this was a fairly easy collection to appraise, and we got him an offer within 48 hours. Believe me, I've been doing this for a very long time, and just because he was eager to sell and we provided a very strong offer quickly, doesn't always mean he will sell. Being that there was such an emotional attachment to this collection, we figured that there would be a few days of going back and forth. And it wouldn't be so much of negotiating a price, but rather him thinking about pulling the trigger. So, I went over the numbers again and again - just to make sure everything was 100% accurate and that we provided the strongest possible offer - because the last thing I would want to do would be to insult someone by giving them a low-ball offer (it's like a slap in the face!). So I got myself mentally prepared and all ready for the call: coffee poured, spreadsheet open, and every possible question already answered in my head. Then wouldn't ya know, the call lasted all of three minutes. As soon as I made him an offer, he gasped and said "Wow, that's more than I thought I'd get. Done deal. I'll get the cards ready to ship out". Then I started explaining to him that since this was a valuable collection and he lived all the way out in California, that he can ship the package on our FedEx account that way he didn't have to worry about any shipping expenses. He was so happy with the offer we gave him that he said that it wasn't necessary and that he'll take care of the shipping. That doesn't usually happen, but we're not going to argue!
We started to get a little nervous after not seeing his package for a few days. Did he send it out yet? Did the package get re-rerouted? Did he end up getting cold feet? The standard would be to send a package out like this via FedEx 2-day, and we were approaching the end of day three. So we were concerned a bit. But after a quick call, we found out that it was sent it via FedEx Saver, which just like it sounds, is a cheaper way to ship, but also may take a little longer to get there. Well, long story short, the package finally arrived, we verified its contents, and then overnighted him a check.
Aside from that little hiccup of not knowing exactly when his package was going to arrive to our office, everything went perfectly smooth - from the initial call, to the evaluation, to the offer. We were extremely happy with the whole process, and so was he. We were able to buy an awesome collection of cards, and he was able to pay some necessary bills. Win-win.
Even though we literally just bought the collection a few days ago, we've already turned the collection around and listed all the cards individually for auction on eBay! All cards start at $0.99 with no reserve, and end this Sunday night! The Koufax and Mays are stunning, both high grade and very well centered. The Marachal and Santo rookie are also studs, both graded PSA 8 and nicely centered.
