In the spring and summer of 1977, youngsters across the country were busy ripping Topps Baseball wax packs looking for their favorite players.  Whether they were members of the defending 1976 World Series Champion Cincinnati Reds like Pete Rose, Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan or Tony Perez, aging future Hall of Famers like Carl Yastrzemski and Willie Stargell (who still had an MVP season left in him) or the season’s rookie sensation Mark “The Bird” Fidrych, there were plenty of stars and local heroes to be found.

Little did many realize that years down the road, many cards that were little more than ”throw-ins” included in 3-for-1 or 4-for-1 trades for the latest issue of Carlton Fisk, Fred Lynn or Tom Seaver would turn out to be similar to the Nolan Ryan for Jim Fregosi trade.  Andre Dawson, Dale Murphy and Bruce Sutter were just a few of the rookies that made their debut in the issue and now sell for more than most of the stars for whom they were probably swapped.   1977 Topps Baseball wax packs retailed for $0.15 per pack and contained 10 cardboard heroes and a stick of Topps bubble gum.  Today, those same packs sell for $40.00 to $60.00 with graded packs selling for even more.   We are always buying baseball cards and unopened packs from 1879-1979.  For a free baseball card appraisal, fill out our online appraisal form.
