We are days away from dropping the puck for the first faceoff of the 2015-2016 National Hockey League season where the Chicago Blackhawks will attempt to defend their Stanley Cup title on the ice. Just Collect has a great selection of hockey cards ending at auction on Sunday with one of the highlights being the 1979 O-Pee-Chee PSA 6 rookie card of Wayne Gretzky.
Gretzky needs little introduction as he’s widely considered to be the greatest player to ever lace up a pair of skates. “The Great One” began his unequalled career by winning eight straight Hart Trophies (MVP Award) and winning four Stanley Cups over five seasons in the 1980's while starring with the Edmonton Oilers. Wayne is the NHL's all-time scoring leader with 2,857 points and is the all-time leader in goals (894) and assists (1,963). He also holds the single season record for points (215), goals scored (92) and assists (163) and was immediately inducted into the National Hockey Hall of Fame once his career was done in 1999 as the mandatory waiting period was waived. Gretzky is also the only player in league history to have his number "99" retired league-wide.
This card is one of two rookie cards made for Gretzky in 1979 with the other being the more widely distributed Topps version. If you look at the images of the cards, both have the same picture on the front. The O-Pee-Chee card, which has realized a hefty price increase in the past few years, typically sells for more than its Topps counterpart. Gretzky’s rookie card has also been a card that has been counterfeited over the years. PSA versions are in high demand as they afford the buyer the confidence that the card is authentic!
