1941 Play Ball Joe DiMaggioMusic to Our Ears

We've used song lyrics to describe some collections that we've seen and/or purchased in the past. Well, this collection reminds us of the Rolling Stones classic with the lyric, "You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes you just might find you get what you need."

We traveled down along the Atlantic Shore to view a tobacco collection that had been in the family for more than a century. We met them at their back, where they kept the collection in a Safe Deposit Box. We reviewed the collection, finalized our valuations and while it was a lovely collection that we were very interested in purchasing, the family wasn't prepared to accept our offer and/or sell it during our visit. However, we did meet with another nice woman that worked at the bank that wanted us to review a collection that her father had assembled.

The woman said that her father was an avid collector and that his favorite player was Joe DiMaggio. She had a letter, the postmarked return envelope and small black & white photo that DiMaggio personalized and autographed to her father and sent to him after her father had stopped in DiMaggio's San Francisco restaurant decades ago.

There's A Little Bit of Everything in There

While the collection wasn't large in respect to quantity or in top condition, there was a nice assortment and there were some star cards. The collection included T205, T206 and T210 tobacco cards, E90-1, E90-2 and E95 caramel and candy cards as well as a few prewar and post war cards. There were a few Hall of Famers include Frank "Home Run" Baker, Cy Young, Napolean "Nap" Lajoie and Tris Speaker included in the tobacco and caramel cards.

The Yankee Clipper

There were a few cards from the 1941 Play Ball Set which inlcuded Joe DiMaggio (there was some writing on the reverse), Mel Ott and the last card in the set, Vernon "Lefty" Gomez.

The Mick

And what collection, no matter how old or how recent, would be complete without a Mickey Mantle card?  This collection was represented by a 1968 Topps Mickey Mantle.

While we would've loved to have come home with the collection that we originally scheduled the trip to view, we are quite please to have been able to view this collection as well as reaching agreement with the seller and being able to purchase the cards, so, "if you try sometimes you just might find you get what you need."

Our Buying Philosophy

We've run into a wide range of people and collections over the past decade. Although we are known for buying vintage sports cards and especially vintage basketball cards, we are also extremely interested in buying non-sports cards, also!

Every collection and every collector is different and we treat EVERY collection with the respect and attention that we show for our own collections. We understand that many have put their heart and soul into building their collection. So when you're ready to sell, Just Collect understands the feelings that you're going through and we will work with you to help you reach a decision that is a WIN/WIN, because if you're not happy, we're not happy.

Won't They Be Worth More if I Grade Them Myself

We discuss all of the selling options with everyone that we meet with. In most cases, selling the collection on their own will put the most money on the bottom line, but it will also take an large commitment of time and energy and one that most are not ready or able to undertake. Another misconception is that grading the collection will return more money. When I hear people say, "You're just going to grade them and get ten times the money," I almost cringe. Grading a collection can be a money losing proposition, especially if you don't know what you're doing. And most times, we grade very few, if any cards, from average collections that we buy.

We value a collection based upon the condition and the value. If a card is worth $100 in a PSA 7 NM, we're going to value it at $100 whether it is ungraded or graded. You can spend hundreds or thousands of dollars grading your cards, but we're still valuing them the same and paying the same regardless of how much you've invested in grading them.

We Are Always Buying

Just Collect is always buying vintage sports and non-sports cards from 1879 to 1979 as well as select modern cards.
