We've been busy with buying trips and attending shows the past few weeks, but we still wanted to get you a posting about a recent collection that we bought. Breaking the mold, we haven't processed this one, yet, but still wanted to share it with you.

1933 Goudey Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig

"They say, 'Three time's a charm,' and it was with me," wrote a retired Florida woman that recently sold her collection of Goudey cards to Just Collect.  Decades ago, she and her husband owned a tobacco store in Queens, NY and one day, a local man came in with a shoebox collection of pre-war baseball cards consisting of 1933 Goudey, 1933 Sport Kings, 1935 Goudey 4-in-1 and 1938 Batters-Up cards.  She recalled her husband cleaning out the register to buy the collection for a few hundred dollars and they stashed them away.

Years later, the couple sold the tobacco store and retired to Florida. Sadly, her husband passed and she was left with this box of cards.  She relates,

"For more than twenty years, I've had in my possession a small collection of Goudey Baseball Cards.  Wanting to find them a good home and knowing little about how to value them, I sought out a local dealer where I live.  He was a patient fellow and we looked up several of the cards on his online Beckett Price Guide.  He also showed me what to look for as to their condition.  I was disheartened to find out that he could only offer me a fraction of their cost.  He did, however, name three places out of my local area that could appraise them.  With some trepidation, I mailed them out to a well-know dealer in Ohio.  After a dew days, they got back to me with an offer that was a bit higher.  I decided to decline and try a third place -- Just Collect.  The moment that I spoke with them, I felt confident that my cards were going to be in good hands.  Upon their return from the Ohio dealer, I sent the cards out again -- this time with the postage prepaid by Just Collect.  I received a fair offer from Just Collect days later, which was three times higher than my first offer and twice as much as the second one."

The collection consisted of a partial 1933 Goudey Baseball Set that was well-loved and ranged from POOR to VERY GOOD in condition with the majority of the card being FAIR to GOOD.  The collection included many Hall of Famers and included the #1 Benny Bengough, #92 Lou Gehrig and two #144 Babe Ruth cards.  The 1933 Sport Kings included several athletes from other sports including legendary Notre Dame football coach Knute Rockne, tennis Hall of Famer Bill Tilden and hockey Hall of Famer Eddie Shore and golfing legend Gene Sarazan.

We're happy to have purchased this collection and the seller's story is one that makes us both happy and sad.  We're happy that she found us and received a fair price for her collection, but we're sad to know that there are others that are offering far less than Just Collect is paying for the EXACT same collection -- in this case, Just Collect was paying TWICE the price of their competition!

Just Collect is always interested in purchasing vintage sports cards and is paying the highest prices in the industry for your vintage collectibles. Please contact us today for a free appraisal and a cash offer if you're interested in selling.
