A very rare uncut sheet of 1952 Topps baseball cards was discovered, and Just Collect sat down with the owner to learn about this historic piece.
When baseball cards are manufactured, large sheets are made. Imagine a big poster filled with multiple baseball cards from a set. The sheet is then cut so that each card is then invdiually placed into a pack. Occasionally you could find and purchase an "uncut" sheet - a full sheet of cards having never been cut. Finding vintage uncut sheets is like opening a history book! You can see how cards came out of the Topps factory, before you found a pack of cards at your local gas station. Vintage uncut sheets are pretty rare, so when we found this unbelievable sheet of 1952 Topps baseball cards, I had to share the story with you! Here is the owner, Bob, telling us where this beautiful piece came from while we were at The Philly Show.
While there was no Mickey Mantle rookie card, on the sheet, there are multiple stars like Hall of Famer, Robin Roberts, and six-time All-Star for the Yankees, Allie Reynolds. The sheet has TWO Roberts cards! You heard Bob mentioned these sheets were purchased in the early 1980's at the Silver Spring Amory show in Maryland by his father. Bob and his dad were set up next to Dan McKee. We had the pleasure of speaking with Dan and his TWO 1914 Baltimore News Babe Ruth rookie cards he once owned in an amazing story you can read HERE. If only I had a DeLorean time machine; I would love to see the other items that were in the Silver Spring show 40 years ago. In 1981, Topps packs set us back about about 30 cents. A cello pack was a whopping 49 cents. Bob wouldn't real the price tag on his 1952 Topps uncut sheet in 1981, but my weekly allowance for cutting the lawn might have covered this historic piece! Thank you for sharing your story with me, Bob!
