Flashback to Just Collect at The National Ten Years ago in 2012

See the Cards We Brought and Advice We Gave in Baltimore TEN Years Ago
  • June 20, 2022

The 2022 National is just around the corner, and is in our back yard here in New Jersey. As we gear up to both buy and sell at the biggest sports collectors convention in the Country, we found this old video we did from the National TEN years ago! See which cards we brought to sell back then and a bit of advice our owner, Leighton, provided. Did the advice hold a decade later?

Next month is the biggest show of the year - the National. Nearly any card, autograph, or piece of memorabilia you can dream of will be bought or sold at this show. There is also a huge list of autograph signings taking place. Just Collect will certainly be there; we are one of the biggest buyers of collections in the Country. As we began to prepare for the show, we stumbled upon this video from the 2012 National show in Baltimore. Wow - TEN years ago!

The hobby has changed so much over the last ten years. Imagine telling a collector in 2012 that a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle graded PSA 9 would sell for 5.2 million dollars in 2021. A PSA 9 sold for $282,587.50 in 2006 so surely that story wouldn't have been believable. A PSA 3 copy of the T206 Honus Wagner sold for 1.2 million dollars in 2012. In 2021 an SGC 3 copy sold for 6.6 million! Modern cards of Tom Brady and LeBron James are reaching seven-figure sales. A LOT can change in 10 years, believe us.

Which cards did Just Collect bring to the National a decade ago?  Does the advice we gave ten years ago still hold true today? Let's watch the video and find out:

A 1909-1911 T206 White Border PSA 8  Piedmont back was in our showcase. In 2012, that PSA 8 was the only copy known graded an 8, and there was only one graded PSA 9 with zero 10's. Today - still the same. That PSA population report has NOT changed. Happy to say that we brought the right card to the National in 2012.

1895 Mayo's Cut Plug (N300) John (Monte) Ward SGC 35 (a 2.5). Funny how Leighton recalls this half grade being "new." This is still a pretty rare card today. The PSA population report has just two graded, both receiving a grade of 1. SGC has a few more cards on their population report with a total of 21. The highest-graded copy on the SGC site is a 4. Still a nice choice to bring to the National 10 years ago.

1911 Sporting Life (M116). Three high-grade copies came including a Smokey Joe Wood. Between SGC and PSA combined, only 33 Wood cards have been graded still ten years later.

The advice back in 2012? "Buy the best that you can afford." That still holds true today. Buying quality and better material, though less or fewer, you'll be better off in the long run.

We will be buying and selling at the National next month; please stop on by our booth! We can't wait to record this year's show and look bac in 2032.
