Multiple cards of Mickey Mantle, Hank Aaron, and a pair of Bob Gibson rookie cards highlight collection proudly purchased by Just Collect.
NINE Mickey Mantle cards in one collection? That will certainly grab anyone's attention! When Nancy reached out to us at Just Collect, asking if we were interested in purchasing a collection of 1950's and 1960's Topps baseball cards, the Mick cards stole our eyes, too.
Nancy had no interest in baseball cards when she was younger. In fact, Nancy had never even been to a baseball game! That quickly changed when she met her husband; Nancy was introduced to his other great love.
Raised on a small farm near Twin Falls, Idaho, Nancy's husband loved baseball. His grandparents took him to minor league games as the game in the family; grandpa played baseball in the early 1900's. Nancy's husband would reminisce with her about the days when he checked box scores in the newspapers to keep up on teams, and, like many of us did, when he began collection Topps cards one gum pack at a time. Nancy told us her husband would skip lunch at school to buy cards! Being well ahead of his time when it came to protecting his cards, each went into binders. Back in the 1950's and 60's, kids often played games of flip or put their cards into bike spokes; what an amazing story to hear about cards being stored in binders nearly 70 years ago!
FIVE 1958 Topps Mickey Mantle All-Star cards are shown in the first photo below. Each card looks to have four sharp corners; not something you see with cards from the 1950's and 1960's. We bet you or your parents put a rubber band around a stack of cards, then put that stack in a shoebox, just dinging up those corners. The red background with yellow stars is a favorite card of ours. In 1958, Mantle made one of his 20 All-Star teams! In the same photo are three 1959 Topps All-Star cards of The Mick.
The second photo features Hank Aaron. Among the nine Aaron cards, I enjoy the 1959 design you see on the top left with the yellow background and circle frame. The Hammer, Hank Aaron retired with 755 home runs, the most all-time upon hanging up his uniform.
Willie Mays, Harmon Killebrew, Roger Maris, and Roberto Clemente are LEGENDS of baseball and each are in the third photo below. We could fill up this entire post about how amazing each one is, and it's hard to point a favorite card out from this picture - but it has to be Bob Gibson. The 1959 Topps card with the pink background is the hurler's rookie card. Of all the accolades Gibson has, the ERA he posted on the mound in 1968 was a miniscule 1.12. The lowest ERA by a pitcher in 2024 was Chris Sale's 2.38!
Yogi Berra, a ten-time World Series champion and three-time MVP shows up with SIX cards from the 1959 Topps set in the fourth photo. As you pull up each photo in the fourth, fifth, and sixth photos, it is a who's who of Cooperstown: Sandy Koufax, Ernie Banks, White Ford, Frank Robinson, Stan Musial, and so many more.
Nancy's collection from her husband takes us back to the late 1950's and early 1960's when eggs only set us back 55 cents per dozen, gas was 25 cents per gallon, and we were a long, long way from using the cell phone in your hand.
