Mike Heffner of Leland's Talks Collecting Passion, Tips, and Stories

Rare 1919 Black Sox World Series Ticket, WWF Memorabilia, and Leighton Memories!
  • July 09, 2024

The highest-graded 1919 World Series ticket from the Chicago Black Sox scandal available at Leland's auction house, and a ring-worn Ric Flair robe in a personal collection. Leland's owner, Mike Heffner, joins Leighton from Just Collect to talk about his personal collection, hobby tips, rare items up for auction, and stories from when Leighton was just a young kid out of college!

After graduating from Rutgers college in 2000, Leighton Sheldon hadn't quite yet founded our wonderful company, Just Collect. Fresh out of school, Leighton worked for Leland's, where he began his journey of becoming a world-renowned expert of sports cards and memorabilia. While at the Strongsville Sports Collectors Convention in Ohio, Leighton caught up with the owner of the auction house, Mike "Heff" Heffner.

Leighton and Heff share great stories including:

  • Heff's passion for collecting ring-worn wrestling items that includes a robe worn by Ric Flair
  • A 1919 World Series ticket from the Black Sox scandal - the highest graded by PSA
  • Items in the next Leland's auction including a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle rookie card
  • Where the hobby will be in five years
  • Photo matching
  • Stories from when Leighton was just a young kid!

You can see the entire interview here:

"Our tastes can change over time, but we still don't lose that love for collecting." - Leighton Sheldon. This is so very true! While you may have changed collecting goals or players you fill up your binders with, you still love to collect.

Thank you for joining the show, Heff! Make sure to check out all of the items in the video at Leland's HERE.

If you're interested in selling your collection, be it wrestling or vintage cards, we are buying! We'll be at the 2024 National Sports Collectors Convention in Cleveland July 23th - July 28th at booths 1642 + 1543. You can see the National show info HERE.

Can't make it to the National? We can still review your collection and offer our free appraisal. Recently, we purchased a collection of 19th Century baseball cards dating back to 1887 and a collection of rare, high-end Aaron Judge rookie cards as an example of our range of interest! You could stop by our store here in Summit, NJ or ship your collection with our fully-insured, two-day FedEx account. For lager collections, we will travel! We traveled across the US from our office in Summit, NJ to Seattle, WA. to purchase a huge collection of vintage basketball cards earlier this year. We can't wait to hear from you!

Just Collect is always buying vintage sports and non-sports cards from 1879 to 1979 as well as select modern cards. If you have a collection that you are considering selling, contact us today to discuss or get our industry-leading purchase offer. If you have a collection that you want appraised, please contact us and we would be happy to discuss your collection and help you understand the real cash value of your collection in the current marketplace. Check out the Just Collect Buy List.

We always offer a FREE APPRAISAL for your collection here at the Just Collect site. Just click here:

We offer may ways to evaluate your cards other than or using our website, too.

  • Travel to Us

If you can make the trip here like the son from my hometown did for this collection- we can make a deal at the office. We once met a father-son duo that drove eight hours from Virginia to meet us to sell a Michael Jordan rookie card stored in Tupperware since 1986 - great read here

  • Come to convention

We keep a LIST of card shows we'll be attending.  Come stop by the Just Collect table and chat.

  • Meet in-person

If you have a valuable collection and want us to come to you, we'll hop on the next plane out.

  • Meet in New York City

If you're near New York City and would like to meet in a public place, our owner, Leighton, would be happy to meet you; read all the information here.

  • SHIP your collection

If you choose to mail your cards for an appraisal, we will evaluate your cards for FREE still. If you choose not to sell the cards, we'll ship them back shipping fees paid by us!  We can offer our FedEx account with 2-day shipping, fully insured, all covered by us. Simply contact the office to set up this option.

We've run into a wide range of people and collections over the last 25 years. Although Just Collect is known for buying vintage sports cards and especially vintage baseball cards, we are also extremely interested in buying non-sports cards, too!

Every collection and every collector is different and we treat EVERY collection with the respect and attention that we show for our own collections. We understand that many have put their heart and souls into building their collections. So when you're ready to sell, we understand the feelings that you're going through and will work with you to help you reach a decision that is a WIN/WIN, because if you're not happy, we're not happy.

Whether you have vintage cards or modern wax you want to sell, you can reach out to us any time!
