Even if you think you don’t like surprises, your brain does. Last year, it was discovered that the pleasure centers in the brain do not react to pleasurable substances equally, but rather they reacted more strongly when the pleasures were unexpected. That’s right, the unexpected is what brings us the most joy and that is why we here at Just Collect and you, the collector, love this hobby so much. We enjoy reading about collections that come out of nowhere like The Unsolicited Collection that arrived at our offices unexpectedly and had many Hall of Famers including Mickey Mantle. Now, we have a new collection that has stimulated our pleasure centers: The Seiko Collection.

The Seiko Collection

A gentleman by the name of David arrived at our offices unannounced. He brought to us a collection of 1948 and 1950 Bowman Baseball Cards that was stored inside a vintage Seiko watch box. Say that three times fast.

While the collection isn’t huge in quantity, it is huge in quality because what makes this collection great is that it includes five Warren Spahn rookie cards and three Stan Musial rookie cards from the 1948 Bowman set. In addition, the collection also includes a 1948 Bowman of Yogi Berra and Phil Rizzuto as well as a 1950 Bowman of Gil Hodges and Casey Stengel.

The collection also includes two beautiful ticket stubs from Yankees games in 1951! The games took place on August 5th and August 18th: both Yankees wins. While this was during Mickey Mantle’s rookie year, he did not play in either game. Who did play in those games? Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra, and Phil Rizzuto! 

On August 5th, 1951, the Yankees defeated the St. Louis Browns 4-3. It wasn’t a great game for Berra, Rizzuto, or DiMaggio as neither recorded a hit that day, but The Yankee Clipper and Scooter each had an RBI. On August 18th, Rizzuto did not play, but Yogi was 1-4 and Joltin’ Joe had an RBI in a 5-1 win over the Philadelphia Athletics. 

These ticket stubs may not fetch six figures like that of a ticket stub from Mickey Mantle's Debut, but they are still a great find. We are buying full tickets and ticket stubs from sporting events like this as well as concerts and famous, historical moments!

The Seiko Collection Story

David didn’t know that his dad collected baseball cards so when he opened the box for the first time, he learned something new about his father. After the discovery, David researched the ‘48 and ‘50 Bowman himself. 

1948 was a busy year. Popcorn sold on a mass scale for the first time, Howdy Doody entertained children on television, and President Harry S. Truman was re-elected in a stunning upset over Thomas E. Dewey. In 1950, milk was still delivered to your doorstep, James Dean's big break came in a Pepsi commercial, and Sunset Boulevard was in theaters. Years later, these moments, just like these baseball cards and ticket stubs, are a part of history. Now, years later, they were in our office.

John, our vintage card specialist and acquisitions manager here at Just Collect, helped David with his collection. David got John's attention when he said he had "Vintage Bowman". David did his own research before finding Just Collect. He knew about PSA, but didn't know how their grading system worked. Fortunately, he came to the right place and John explained the PSA grading scale to him and how the value is determined by the grade of the cards. 

After receiving an offer for the collection, David decided to take some time to think about it. After a week, David returned and the offer was accepted.
