A gentleman in Ohio read about Just Collect in the newspaper and that led to us purchasing one of the nicest 1955 Topps Sandy Koufax rookie cards we've seen! Newspapers still delivering here in 2026. 

When is the last time you read a newspaper? It's been a while for us, too. After today, you may start picking the paper up again! Just Collect previously purchased a collection of vintage cards from a collector named John. Turns out, John is a freelance writer and wrote about his experience in an Ohio newspaper. Jeff picked up the paper, read the story, and decided he wanted to sell his 1955 Topps and 1956 Topps baseball cards. Jeff owned one of the nicest Sandy Koufax rookie cards we have ever held!

THE COLLECTION

Jeff's father collected cards as a kid in the 1950's. Rather than trading or flipping, dad tried to complete the entire set of 1955 Topps. The Roberto Clemente rookie card eluded him, but Jeff's dad completed most of the entire set. A second challenge came in 1956 when dad tried to complete that set, too! Pack by pack, dad purchased the cards and made a run at a full set. Well before the Internet and card shows, this was hard to do! 

While Jeff's dad couldn't find every card in the sets, he had all the key names including Jackie Robinson, Willie Mays, Ted Williams, and Ernie Banks. The card standing out is the Sandy Koufax rookie.

Koufax pitched 12 seasons for the Dodgers and won four World Series championships, three Cy Young awards, pitched four no-hitters with one being a perfect game! Few pitchers today can hold a candle to what Koufax did in just 12 seasons.

As you look at the photos below, you can see how great the condition  of each card is! While the centering is off, a few of these cards look as if Jeff's dad opened a pack, looked a the cards, and placed the cards back in the pack for 70 years.

APPRAISAL AND PURCHASE

Jeff was given his dad's collection of cards. After reading the newspaper article about the collection we purchased from John, he searched Google and our reviews. Jeff looked at the collections our owner, Leighton, purchased, and what our Vice President, John, and acquisitions specialist, Dan does to make the transaction easy and comfortable. The retail stores are focused on selling modern products and simply don't have the time or the knowledge to carefully evaluate vintage collections like Jeff's. This is where we are happy to help you! John made Jeff an initial offer but explained to Jeff we would need to see the cards in-person. As you know, condition is very important when determining the value of your cards; a rounded corner or a crease the naked eye can't see could alter the value by hundreds if not thousands of dollars. As each card wasn't graded, we needed to see the stars in-person. Jeff asked if we would be in the Ohio area, and we sure were! Leighton was in-town for the Strongsville, OH. convention to buy and sell collections. After viewing each card and confirming the condition, Just Collect proudly purchased the cards! We then paid Jeff in cash! When you choose to sell your collection to Just Collect, we pay you in cash, company check, or wire transfer.
