A new price record for a 1954 Topps Ernie Banks rookie card has been set with a whopping $198,000. The new record holder is graded PSA 9. How many PSA 10 grades exist for a Mr. Cub rookie? The answer is not many.
Ernie Banks is one of the greatest baseball players to have ever stepped on the field. When Banks retired, he left the game with 512 career home runs, 2 MVP awards (1958 and 1959), a Gold Glove (1960), and was named to 14 All-Star games. Banks did it all with the Chicago Cubs between 1953 and 1971, rightfully earning the nickname Mr. Cub.
Banks' rookie card is in the 1954 Topps set. This highly-popular set also includes the rookie cards of fellow Hall of Famers in Hank Aaron and Al Kaline as well as many legends of the game such as Jackie Robinson, Ted Williams, and Willie Mays. When a high-grade Banks rookie hit the auction block, collectors like you and us noticed right away!
Robert Edwards Auctions offered a PSA 9 copy of the Banks rookie card, one of just 14 to be graded as such. If you're not familiar with grading, cards are evaluated on their condition and given grades ranging from 1 to 10, with ten being a perfect mint condition. Cards that are nearly 70-years-old are very tough to find is such immaculate condition. You probably put cards on your bike spokes , played a game of FLIP, or placed a rubber band around your stack before putting your cards in a shoebox. With 57 bids, REA had a new record for a publicly-sold Ernie Banks record with a price of $198,000!
There are only 2 Banks cards have been graded PSA 10, and the last sale of one took place a decade ago, also in the six-figure range. If either of the two hits the market now, we'd imagine the price will be a tad more now than it was ten years ago.
Look at a young Ernie on his rookie card! Smiling in the portrait and looking to zero in on a pitch for a homer in the action shot.
