A SIGNED 1909-11 T206 card for a Hall of Famer! While at the National Sports Collectors Convention, Just Collect owner, Leighton Sheldon, purchased his White Wale.
The 1909-11 T206 set is iconic. One of the most recognizable and desired card set of our hobby, it is the T206 set where you'll find the famous Honus Wagner card. Other baseball legends appear in the such such as Ty Cobb and Cy Young. While at the National Sports Collectors Convention, our owner, Leighton, was on a mission to find a specific card from this set: Hall of Famer, Rube Marquard. The caveat: Leighton wanted the card to be SIGNED! Was it possible to have a 115 + year-old card autographed by a Hall of Famer show up our booth during the National? YES!
Richard William "Rube" Marquard made MLB debut September 25th, 1908 for the New York Giants, just in time to be included in the T206 card set. Pitching for the Giants, Marquard would lead the league in wins in 1911 and strikeouts in 1912. While in New York, Marquard pitched a no-hitter on April 15th, 1915. The Baseball Hall of Fame came calling in 1971 where Marquard took his place among baseball lore.
Leighton has been reading the book, The Glory of Their Times. Former players tell stories about the 20th Century of baseball, including Marquard. Before heading to the National, Leighton wondered if he could find a SIGNED Marquard T206 card. Marquard was the last surviving member of the Hall of Fame to have a card in the T206 set until his passing on June 1st, 1980. Is the card as valuable as a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle? Not quite! However, a card 115 years-old, autographed by a Hall of Famer featured in a book that Leighton has been enjoying quickly became his White Whale!
