A new record for most-expensive sports card has been set! A T206 Honus Wagner baseball card just sold for 7.25 MILLION dollars. Believe it or not, this record price may not last long at all; see what card could be crowned King in just a few weeks.
When a baseball card is dubbed "The Holy Grail" of cards, the price tag that comes attached to such a treasure is naturally a trove of riches. The T206 Honus Wagner is the Grail, and this week one of the about 60 copies known to exist sold for a record 7.25 million dollars! This price record eclipses the old record by about a million dollars, which also belongs one of the rare Wagner cards. Believe it or not, Honus might want to get too comfortable on the throne as King of baseball cards; another player's card might sell for an ever larger sum later this month!
T206 HONUS WAGNER - THE HOLY GRAIL OF CARDS
As part of the T206 Tobacco set, the Honus Wagner is one of the most-sought cards in the hobby. The T206 baseball card set was distributed in various brands of tobacco between 1909 and 1911. For unknown reasons, Wagner chose not to have his card produced in the set (either to prevent kids from using tobaccos, or most likely that The American Tabaco Company and Wagner could not agree on compensation for using his likeness). The ATC stopped producing the Wagner card, leaving the hobby with very few cards documented; the estimate is around 50 known examples to exist. Since 1933, the Wagner card has been one of, if not the most expensive card to own. Most collectors consider the T206 set "complete" without the Wagner as owning a copy is impossible to do without breaking your bank account. Now a new bar has set - at over seven million dollars!
RECORD-BREAKING SALE
Goldin Auctions announced a private sale for a T206 Honus Wagner graded a 2 out of 10 by SGC, a professional grading company that grades cards. When it comes to a Honus Wagner card, a 2 out of 10 is NOT a "bad grade." In fact, only five other copies of the Honus Wagner have ever received a higher grade. Keep in mind that these T206 cards sat in tobacco packs over 100 years ago; mint-condition cards rarely exist from this set.
THE RECORD BE BROKEN AGAIN THIS MONTH
The Wagner's reign on top may not last long! Hard to imagine that a card that JUST broke the record by over a million dollars as most expensive card of all-time could have the price tag surpassed so quickly. However, Mickey Mantle's rookie card from the iconic1952 Topps baseball card set is poised to reach a historic price.
We told you about a Mickey Mantle rookie card displayed at the National Sports Collectors Convention last weekend. That very card is available at Heritage Auctions. With 21 days left to bid, the price is already at 6.1 million dollars! How far will the price soar? The estimate is 10 million; enough to set the record by a mile.
We will certainly update you once the Mantle auction becomes official. However, let's give the Wagner card the appreciate it deserves; The Holy Grail is still currently the most expensive card on the planet!
