Sometimes, a collection is about much more than the cards or memorabilia — it’s about family, memories, and what those items can mean for the next generation. Just Collect proudly purchased a Ted Williams rookie card and the funds are going towards a wedding!

Last week, a gentleman named Roger called the Just Collect office and spoke with our Acquisitions Specialist, Dan, about two special pieces that had been passed down through his family from generation to generation. One item was a 1939 Play Ball Ted Williams rookie card that Roger wanted to learn more about.

1939 PLAY BALL TED WILLIAMS - WEDDING FUND!

Gum, Incorporated released a set of 161 cards in 1939 called Play Ball. Measuring 2-1/2" x 3-1/8" in size, the cards are larger than the tobacco cards most collectors were used to seeing at the time. Cards are black and white and feature a player image on the front! No logos or branding appear until you flip the cards over. Among the checklist is card #92, the TED WILLIAMS ROOKIE CARD.

Ted Williams is perhaps the greatest hitter in the history of baseball. Teddy Ballgame was a 19-time All-Star who won two MVP awards (1946 and 1949) and he won the Triple Crown by leading the league in batting average, home runs, and RBI in both 1942 and 1947. Williams is still the all-time leader in on base percentage at .482, and is the last player ever to bat over .400 (.406 in 1941) in a season. If there is a rookie card to own, this is it!

Dan took the time to review the Ted Williams card, provided Roger with a free appraisal based on its condition, and made him an offer. Roger was happy with the offer and decided it was time to sell. But what made this deal especially meaningful was the reason behind it.
Roger told us that he wanted to use the money from the card to help pay for some of his daughter’s upcoming wedding expenses.

A treasured card that had been passed down through generations was now going to help his family celebrate an entirely new chapter — and we were honored to be a small part of that story.

Roger was very happy with how simple and smooth the entire process was. He also decided to send us his 1955 Dodgers team-signed baseball. We’ll help him have the signatures authenticated and, once that process is complete, make him an offer on the baseball too. The ball is signed by legends including Jackie Robinson, Sandy Koufax, Roy Campanella, Duke Snider, and many more.
