1984 Fleer Glenn Hubbard Snake Card is a Halloween Treat

Learn the History Behind "The Snake" Card
  • October 28, 2022

You instantly recognize the 1984 Fleer Glenn Hubbard baseball card; it is hard to miss the giant snake wrapped around his neck! With Halloween on Monday we wanted to fill you on the backstory of "the snake card" - you can't picture another card synonymous with Halloween, can you? Get ready for a tie in to this year's World Series, too!

When you pull the Hubbard out of a pack of baseball cards, the first thing you see is the giant snake wrapped around Hubbard's neck! The card has drawn a lot of interest over the last few decades and even sells for around $10 on eBay. There is so much more happening behind Hubbard in this card, though - SO MUCH. With the World Series starting today between the Philadelphia Phillies and Houston Astros, this Glenn Hubbard "snake card" has the Phillies to thank.

1984 Fleer Glenn Hubbard

  • Above Hubbard's left shoulder, on our right, above that eight-foot python, is the famous Phillie Phanaitc
  • Barney Rubble - yes, from the Flintstones, is opposite of the Phanatic over Hubbard's right shoulder.
  • Balloons are next to Barney Rubble
  • Red Bird mascot above Hubbard's left elbow. We don't believe this is Fredbird, the Cardinals' mascot. Do you know which mascot this is?
  • What's the white thing with what looks to be red eyes floating above the red bird? If you know, we'd love to hear from you!

MLB ran a story about the Hubbard card. The day the photo was taken was Phanatic's birthday, and the mascot invited some of his friends to the party. The Phanatic is how we ended up with one of the coolest baseball cards in the history of the hobby!

If the Phillies win the World Series this year, maybe we'll see another celebration, Phanatic style, and a follow-up card comes out. We wouldn't turn down a Bryce Harper snake card.

This 1984 Glenn Hubbard card screams (see what we did there) Halloween. As the day of candy eating, horror moving watching, and pumpkin carving lurks we thought you'd enjoy the backstory of "the snake card."

If you can make the trip here like the son from my hometown did for this collection- we can make a deal at the office. We once met a father-son duo that drove eight hours from Virginia to meet us to sell a Michael Jordan rookie card stored in Tupperware since 1986 - great read here

We keep a LIST of the card shows we'll be attending.  Come stop by the Just Collect table and chat.

  • Meet in-person

If you have a valuable collection and want us to come to you, we'll hop on the next plane out. We recently took a trip to California to purchase a collection that included three Jackie Robinson 1948 Leaf rookie cards that you can read about here.

We have another location in New York you can meet us at; read all the information here.
