If you want a real challenge (and isn’t that what vintage card collecting is all about?), try caramel cards. Because they were generally distributed with sticky candy that was given directly to children, they are far more difficult to find in higher grades today. Now, combine that with the fact that some caramel cards, designated as “E” cards in the American Card Catalog, were regionally distributed and you have a real hunt on your hands for decent looking examples! This week, we are excited to show off a 1910 E90-3 Jimmy Sheckard graded PSA 4.  That grade may not wow you, but consider this:  it’s one of only three ever graded 4 by PSA with only two rating higher in the 20 years or so that the company has been authenticating and grading vintage cards.  In short, if you’re putting together this set, it’s a gem. The American Caramel Company’s "All the Star Players" set consists of 20 unnumbered cards, each measuring 1-1/2" x 2-3/4".  Issued in the Chicagoland area 103 years ago, the cards feature only players from the Cubs  and White Sox. This particular card features beautiful snow white borders and very, very nice eye appeal. You’ll find several Hall of Famers in the E90-3 set including  Mordecai Brown, Frank Chance, Johnny Evers,  Joe Tinker, and Ed Walsh.  It’s also the home of the Chick Gandil rookie card. E90-3’s are unique with a slightly different in design from the other American Caramel cards that were issued during this era.  Complete sets are virtually impossible to find in the marketplace so we expect competition for this card to be fierce among those who are piecing it together card by card.  They’re dated 1910 but some believe they may have been spread across the late 1910 and early 1911 seasons. We are always on the lookout for rare caramel cards so if you have any you’d like to liquidate, please let us know.
