We hear it all the time, why would you open a vintage pack? Why take the risk? Why not leave well enough alone? And on, and on…Well the answer is simple, we’re cardboard junkies and treasure hunters of the highest degree. Wondering what lurks behind every piece of colorful wax paper keeps us up at night and it’s the reason we get up in the morning. We live for that adrenaline rush that shoots through our body when we uncover a high-grade, low-pop gem and the moment it appears it instantly erases any memory we had of opening an overpriced pack full of commons. But be warned this “all-in”-style of card collecting is not for the faint of heart. Those who choose this path though will experience tremendous highs followed by incredible lows but, fellow daredevil, find solace in our most recent endeavor and know…great risk does offer great reward. As you’ll see in the video, you’re good friends at Just Collect were able to get our anxious hands on an attractive unopened cello pack of 1966 Philadelphia Football cards. Considered by many collectors to be one of the finest and most desirable football card sets ever produced. Unlike today's high-priced, mass produced football cards that contain numerous inserts, jersey, autograph, and numbered cards, the 1966 Philadelphia football set is simple in nature in both design and quantity. It is deemed the best set of the four Philadelphia issues because it contains the key rookie cards of Dick Butkus, Gale Sayers, Bob Hayes, Bob Brown and has a total of 22 rookies and 27 Hall of Famers including the great Johnny Unitas, Bart Starr, and Jim Brown who would retire before the 1966 season began. So with the shades drawn, the doors locked and the camera rolling we went to work. Tensions were high as our in-house pro, Scott Alpaugh, began the delicate extraction and as soon as he was past the fine cello layer the first face to fully appear belonged to that of Don Perkins. Not a bad start for the Cowboys fans in the room but the rest of us were looking for bigger game, and that’s what we got as the next card up was Green Bay Packer great, Ray Nitscke, in all his pack fresh glory! High fives and sighs of relief happened simultaneously and before we even had a chance to set our arms back at our sides we were hit hard again! This time it was Mike Ditka! Score! We were ecstatic! How could it get any better than back-to-back Hall of Famers?! And then it happened (press play now)……… Incredible, right!? Such a great day! Admittedly I had to go back and watch the video myself because I just went blank after the fourth card was exposed but even before I did I knew there was no way we were going to top that peak. Still though the pack finished up pretty strong and it was the kind of experience you hope for every time you peel a wrapper back. But now that those great finds on their way to PSA, where they’re certain to be put in very rare company, we’re again on the lookout for more vintage unopened material.
