From Thurman Munson to Ozzie Smith, the 1970’s Topps sets were packed with some great rookie cards. Garvey. Fisk. Schmidt. Winfield. Brett. Yount. Dawson. Murray. Molitor. It’s also the home to the last several cards of greats like Hank Aaron and Willie Mays. All are highly sought after by collectors today and while those who grew up in the era may not want to admit it, the ‘70’s are vintage! This week, we’ve packed our eBay listings with a great run of complete and near complete sets from 1970-79. These are very nice sets, mostly leaning toward near mint. The ‘70’s were still an era when cards weren’t always properly cared for. They were kept in bags and swapped on back porches rather than immediately stuck in plastic as became the fashion in the next decade. Combine that with the centering issues that still plagued Topps and you know that finding higher grade 1970’s sets is not always a simple task. The 1973 set features the elusive high number series that features Mike Schmidt’s rookie card. We’ve got a nice one up for bid that is attracting a lot of attention. Those early 70’s sets are time consuming to put together on your own because of the high numbers. The ’75 set includes both Brett and Yount rookie cards and is always a favorite of collectors. We’re seeing an uptick in both interest and value for some 1970’s products as more of it gets spread around to collectors who are rediscovering their childhood hobby now that the kids are starting to leave home and there’s a little more disposable income. We’re anxious to see what the final bid tallies are on these nice sets so we can get an idea of where the market stands, especially after this year’s National Sports Collectors Convention (hope we saw you there by the way and thanks if you bought from us or sold us something!). We’d encourage you to check them out and, as always, if you have specific questions about any set, please drop us a line or give us a call. And if you have complete or near complete sets of vintage baseball cards to sell, we’d love to talk to you.
