"Gotta Catch 'em All"

When someone mentions Pokémon, many think of the anime cartoons and Nintendo Game Boy games that kids were clamoring for around the end of the Millennium. Even today, it is not uncommon to pass a park or public place and see a group of people huddled around . . . probably playing Pokémon GO on their cellphones.

The Pokémon Trading Card Game is a collectible card game where players use Pokémon cards featuring an array of different characters with individual strengths and weaknesses. The premise is to inflict damage and defeat their opponent by "knocking out" their Pokémon cards.

Stateside Release

Already a huge success in Japan, the Red and Blue Pokémon version reached the States in late 1998 and was an instant success with the "Gotta Catch 'em All!" campaign. The Trading Card Game was published and distributed in the United States in 1999 by Wizards of the Coast. Pokémon eventually reclaimed distributorship in North America and continues to release new issues worldwide.

The game has evolved over the past 20 years and now features worldwide tournaments, Pokémon Go and an ever evolving universe.

The Collection

Recently, we were contacted by a gentleman who had a large collection of Pokémon cards that his brother had collected. His brother, a professional who worked in New York City, was sadly a victim of the attacks upon the World Trade Center in 2001. The family had recently begun to sort through the collection of cards, games, magazines and other collectibles that had been stored since the brother's passing. The gentleman did some research and found several places that had an interest and whittled that list after some of the companies responded in what he described as a less than professional manner.

Upon initial discussions, he noted that he had done plenty of research and had a general idea of how much the collection was worth and how much that he wanted to get for the collection – explaining that the proceeds would be used to help offset some of the medical bills that a young family member was incurring during a trying illness.Recently, we were contacted by a gentleman who had a large collection of Pokémon cards that his brother had collected. We Buy More Than Just Sports Cards

While Just Collect is known as the nation's largest buyer of sports cards and memorabilia, we also buy plenty of non-sports cards – including some modern issue, like Pokémon and Magic: The Gathering and even original Sega and Nintendo games and game consoles.

Upon initial review of the collection, one of the most exciting aspects were several sealed boxes of "1st Edition" of both the Jungle and Fossil releases from 1999. When we finally got to see the collection in person, there were three sealed boxes of each. In addition, there were thousands of single cards from the Base Set, Jungle, Fossil and a few other booster packs as well as several thousand cards from the Japanese releases, including the Southern Island Promos. Among these were several "1st Edition" foil cards from the Base Release and also Jungle and Fossil.

It was an amazing collection and a testament to his brother's organization. All of the cards were either still in sealed sets or boxes or had been cataloged and boxed in numerical order by issue. Also, the late brother also saved many of the open boxes and empty packs – something that most people simply discarded.

We were extremely happy to reach agreement on a purchase price for the entire Pokémon collection and the knowledge that the funds were going to a good cause helped us feel even better.

We set up at The National Sports Collectors Convention every year and this year.  Next year, 2020, The National will be at the Atlantic Cuity Convention Center in Atlantic City, NJ.  It has also been in Cleveland, Chicago and Baltimore in recent years. Additionally, we travel to the Sports Card and Memorabilia Expo in Mississauga, Ontario for those of you in the Toronto area that want to meet with us in Canada.

Our Buying Philosophy

We've run into a wide range of people and collections over the past decade. Although we are known for buying vintage sports cards and especially vintage basketball cards, we are also extremely interested in buying non-sports cards, also!

We understand that many have put their heart and soul into building their collection. So when you're ready to sell, Just Collect understands the feelings that you're going through and we will work with you to help you reach a decision that is a WIN/WIN, because if you're not happy, we're not happy.

Won't They Be Worth More if I Grade Them Myself

We discuss all of the selling options with everyone that we meet with. In most cases, selling the collection on their own will put the most money on the bottom line, but it will also take an large commitment of time and energy and one that most are not ready or able to undertake. Another misconception is that grading the collection will return more money. When I hear people say, "You're just going to grade them and get ten times the money," I almost cringe. Grading a collection can be a money losing proposition, especially if you don't know what you're doing. And most times, we grade very few, if any cards, from average collections that we buy.

We value a collection based upon the condition and the value. If a card is worth $100 in a PSA 7 NM, we're going to value it at $100 whether it is ungraded or graded. You can spend hundreds or thousands of dollars grading your cards, but we're still valuing them the same and paying the same regardless of how much you've invested in grading them.
