HALF of a 1909-1911 T206 Honus Wagner at Auction

Don't Expect a 50% Discounted Price on this Half Card Either
  • December 09, 2021

HALF of a T206 Honus Wagner card is coming to auction.  Yes, half of a card.  Don't let the poor appearance fool you, though; even 50% of this baseball card is still worth a great deal of money.

There it is - A T206 Honus Wagner, the Holy Grail of baseball cards. Well, HALF of a Wagner anyway.

Don't let the terrible condition of this card fool you, though. Some vintage or iconic cards like this Wagner can still be valuable in any condition. For example, THIS 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle sold for over $10,000 despite looking like it was put in a kid's boke spokes and then in the washing machine after a day of playing outside in the Summer of '52. While it's true not all sports cards will hold value if their condition is not ideal, but this card - this card is a genuine T206 Honus Wagner.

For unknown reasons, Wagner did NOT want his card produced in the T206 Tobacco set back in 1909-1911. Perhaps trying to prevent kids from using tobacco, or a contract dispute over compensation between he and the American Tobacco Company are the two top theories. Printing of the Wagner card came to a halt, leaving the hobby with fewer than 100 cards known to exist.

Since 1933, every record-breaking sale of a sports card has typically been the Wagner.  A copy of this card in better condition is the current-record holder with a sale price of 6.6 million dollars! You can see that card HERE.

This "Half" Wagner has been privately owned since 1995 and is one of the first cards ever graded by PSAYou can see the serial number of 00000002. PSA has graded countless cards since - in the millions! Just how much will 50% of a Wagner set you back? The OPENING bid price will be set at $25,000. We don't believe this card will sell for millions of dollars like other copies of the Wagner have but when the opening price is 25 grand, we'll assume that even half a Wagner is still going to be worth a pretty penny!

SCP Auctions is offering the card in their Winer Premier auction taking place January 19th, 2022 - February 5th, 2022. SCP has experience in auctioning off rare items like the Wager - they've offered another copy graded authentic just a few months ago. HERE is the sneak peak of the "Half" Wagner!

Can you think of any other card - ANY card - that would sell for at least $25,000 if it were ripped in a half? We know that the worst-condition 1952 Topps Micke Mantle above didn't reach 25K. Maybe a Babe Ruth rookie card could? We're curious - let us know in the blog comments which card you think would be able to reach $25,000 or more if it were ripped in half.
