Multiple Mickey Mantle cards, legendary rookies including Nolan Ryan, and icons of the game of baseball such as Hank Aaron and Willie Mays are covering the Just Collect office! Today, we proudly introduce you to the newest collection we purchased from a long-time collector of vintage Topps baseball cards.
Michael grew up a New York baseball fan. Before NY had just the Mets and Yankees, the Giants made the Big Apple their home before relocating to San Francisco after 1957. The Dodgers played ball in Brooklyn before moving to Los Angeles after 1957, too. What a time to be a baseball fan in NY! Like you and we did as kids, Michael collected Topps baseball cards. As you can imagine, his childhood collection includes the stars who roamed the New York diamonds. Recently, Michael decided it was time to sell his childhood card collection and asked us here at Just Collect if we would be interested in buying his cards. YES! Just Collect is always buying!
Mickey Mantle stole the spotlight in New York behind the 7 World Series championships he led the Yankees to during his career. The three-time MVP was elected to 20 All-Star teams, and went down as the greatest switch-hitter in the game. It is no surprise that Michael would have a few Mantle cards in his collection! In the first photo below, you can see Mantle cards from the 1967, 1968, and 1969 Topps baseball sets. The 1969 Topps Mantle card exhibits his last name in white letters. This variation was produced in limited quantities, along with several other players in the set. This variation has more value because of the rarity of the error, or was it a ploy to sell more packs? No one knows for sure.
The 1968 Topps baseball set is home to a few key rookie cards in our hobby - Nolan Ryan and Johnny Bench. The second photo below includes both rookies as well as cards of Tom Seaver, Hank Aaron, Rod Carew, and Pete Rose. Imagine a pitching rotation today having a 1-2 punch of Ryan and Seaver! For their careers, the hurlers combined for 635 wins and 9,354 wins! Both players helped the New York Mets win the 1969 World Series. Not to be outdone, Johnny Bench won a pair of World Series with his Reds, earned 10 Gold Glove awards, and was the MVP in both 1970 and 1972. In the same picture are cards the men who retired as all-time leaders in home runs (Aaron), hits (Rose), and a seven-time batting champion (Carew)! Talk about star power in a photo.
Another catching star leads off the third picture - a 1970 Topps Thurman Munson rookie card. A New York baseball fan would certainly hold onto a Munson card! Munson was the captain of the Yankees, won back-to-back World Series championships in 1977 and 1978, and was the 1976 AL MVP winner. Until Munson was named captain, the Yankees hadn't given that title to any player since Lou Gehrig had been captain last in 1939! Willie Mays was a San Francisco Giant in that 1967 Topps card, but when he was in New York, Willie was unstoppable! Mays delivered a World Series title to the New York Giants and won the league MVP in 1954. A few other great cards in this photo are 1975 Topps rookie cards of George Brett and Robin Yount, both Hall of Famers, and we see first-ballot Hall of Famer, Willie Stargell, on a 1969 Topps card.
The final photo below is a slew of stars from the 1960's and 1970's! From Reggie Jackson to Ernie Banks, and Harmon Killebrew, you'll recognize each name as you read it.
Wonder how many non-New York stars Michael traded as a kid to swap cards of players he liked. Remember trading cards as a kid? Maybe you played flip or put your cards in your bike spokes!
