We know you've reached out to an auction house or two in hopes of selling your collection. What you've learned quickly is that auction houses take a 20% cut of your sale, IF your cards are even sold. A few risks are involved when choosing an auction house that we'll share with you.

Bidders rarely pay full retail price. Your collection could be sold for 80% of the retail value in the auction, and then the auction house collects their 20% afterwards. If your collection has a retail value of $100, a buyer wins by bidding $80, and the auction house collects $16. Your $100 collection nets you $64 at the auction house. You got paid 64% of retail value at auction!

An auction house may not properly promote your cards; it's hard for people to bid on your collection if few people know the auction is running. The house is more likely to promote the super-rare, $100,000 + items and forget about your collection.

eBay is an option to sell your collect, but you see even more risks and fewer rewards! There are not only fees included with selling a collection on eBay, but an extra effort on your part is required, too. Here is a glimpse at potential issues using eBay:

Seller fees for sports cards is 13.25% up to $7,500 and 2.5% on the portion of the sale over $7,500. If your card is sold for $10,000, the seller fees equate to $1,012.50 for the first $7,500 and $625 on the remaining $2,500, leaving you with $8,362.50. This percentage rounds to 84% from an eBay sale. This final percentage doesn't include PROMOTED fees! If you choose to promote your item on eBay, you can choose to do so for anywhere from 2% to 100% of the final sale (including shipping, taxes, etc.). If you want people to see your auction, you're probably adding at least 10% promoted fee. Your $10,000 card nets you about $7,3620.50 on eBay. You got paid 74% of retail value on eBay!
Work! When you sell your cards on eBay, you have to package the cards up and handle the shipping and hope it doesn't get lost or damaged. We know time is money.
