A search of an attic revealed a vintage card collection including multiple cards of Hall of Famers including Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Julius "Dr. J" Erving, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and even multiple Kevin McHale rookie cards!
When Brian's grandmother died, he and his dad went through her attic. Attics are one of the unexpected places we suggest checking for vintage cards. Dad rediscovered the sports cards he collected in the 1950s and 1960s, and among the cards are some of the most iconic names in sports!
As a kid, Brian collected cards in the 1970s and 1980s, and he held onto the cards he pulled out of packs. Remember opening a wax pack as a kid? You'd get 15 or so cards for about 30 cents, and that rock hard stick of gum! We still chewed that gum anyway. As you look at the photos below, you see that Brian's dad knew to collect all the big stars of his youth.
In the first photo below, you can see multiple cards of New York Yankees icon, Mickey Mantle.
The three-time MVP and seven-time World Series champion is on a few cards from the 1960s including Topps releases from 1963, 1964, 1965, and 1966. The larger card among the group is a 1947-66 Exhibits card. Produced by a company from Chicago, IL. named Exhibit Supply Company, these baseball cards were distributed by the company for 20 years. From 1947 to 1966, "Exhibits" were released in packs of 5 cards for 10 cents. The cards measure 3-3/8” by 5-3/8”, much larger than the standard size of 2.5" by 3.5".
More exhibits are in the second photo. The top row is a who's who of baseball! Left to right you can find Al Kaline, Roberto Clemente, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Sandy Koufax, and Yogi Berra. Hard to pick the best player of this group; we won't even try.
Over the next few pictures, more cards from the 1950s and 1960s continue. Highlights like the 1953 Topps Satchel Paige (third photo, center of the middle row), and a whole photo of Willie Mays cards (fourth photo) are catching our eyes. The red and blue cards with gold in the center are 1965 Topps Embossed cards which were randomly placed in packs of '65 Topps; like a modern day insert!
The final photo is of 1981-82 Topps basketball cards. As you scan the cards, stars like Julius "Dr. J" Erving, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Moses Malone are in the collection. Boston Celtic legend, Kevin McHale, has his rookie card in the set and there are FIVE of his rookie cards in the collection!
