Bill Russell, 11-time champion and Boston Celtics great passed away on July 31st. In honor of Russell, whose remarkable career has elevated him to legendary status, the NBA plans to retire jersey no. 6 that he wore throughout his 13-year career. During that time, he won the NBA MVP five times and was an 11-time All-NBA selection. In 1966, he became the first black head coach in American professional sports. As iconic as his career is, Bill Russell's rookie card is just as iconic in the sports collectibles world.
The 1957 Topps #77 Bill Russell rookie card is the most desirable of Bill Russell's basketball cards. On the front, is an image of Russell on defense in what appears to be a dimly lit arena. You can see how physically gifted he was at the ripe age of 23. The design of the card itself is simple with a yellow and red background that doesn't take up too much space and resembles an uneven bow tie while showcasing the player's name and team.
On the back, are highlights of his young career and a foreshadowing of what was to come. The card number, 77, is cleverly located on a backboard while featuring a player that matches his height of 6'10". His stats from his rookie year are located in the bottom left corner. An overall clean and classic design.
