Geoff Wilson Sports Card Investor

We had the pleasure of sitting down with Geoff Wilson of Sports Card Investor live at the National to open a rare 1952 Bowman baseball card wax pack! Watch the video to see the story of a pack seeing the light of day for first time in 70 years and what we pulled.

How rare was this sealed pack of 1952 Bowman baseball cards? PSA has only graded 16 packs from 1952 Bowman baseball. When it comes to the National, we go big or go home. We took one pack off the pop report and broke it with our sister company, Vintage Breaks and had the pleasure of being joined by Geoff Wilson of Sports Card Investor. Could we repeat the magic of the 2018 National when we pulled a Mickey Mantle from a 1955 Bowman baseball cello pack?

While we didn't pull a Mickey Mantle or Willie Mays card, we still unearthed highly-coveted cards to add to the PSA set registry. For a collector looking to complete a high-grade set of 1952 Bowman cards, each card from this pack offers not just that but also has undeniable provenance. Few, if any other cards on the PSA registry will have a known origin; those cards could have changed hands a 100 times. Each card from this pack you see here can be traced back to this exact moment thanks to Vintage Breaks and Geoff Wilson of Sports Card Investor.

Here are the current known totals for PSA-graded cards from the pack:

  • Joe Astroth #170 = 186 graded
  • Walt Dropo #169 = 195 graded
  • Preacher Roe #168 = 299 graded
  • Bob Avilla #167 = 193 graded
  • Bobby Adams #166 = 227 graded
  • Saul Rogovin #165 = 193 graded

Each card has under 300 known graded cards! The Bob Avilla card may receive the highest grade and the projected grade would be a 9 off-center. Currently, there are ZERO cards graded 9 OC. Of all the 193 graded Avilla cards, there are 6 graded PSA 9 (with perfect centering) and only 1 PSA 10 that exists.

Opening this pack was historic; there are now only 15 authenticated and graded packs left known on the PSA population report. So, how do we top this break? You'll find out next year at the 2023 National! ...and there I hope to eat some gum.

FREE APPRAISAL

We offer many ways to evaluate your cards other than using our website, too.

  • Travel to us

If you can make the trip here like the son from my hometown did for this collection- we can make a deal at the office. We once met a father-son duo that drove eight hours from Virginia to meet us to sell a Michael Jordan rookie card stored in Tupperware since 1986 - great read here

  • Come to the convention

We keep a LIST of the card shows we'll be attending.  Come stop by the Just Collect table and chat.

  • Meet in-person

If you have a valuable collection and want us to come to you, we'll hop on the next plane out. We recently took a trip to California to purchase a collection that included three Jackie Robinson 1948 Leaf rookie cards that you can read about here.

  • Meet in New York City

We have another location in New York you can meet us at; read all the information here.

  • SHIP your collection

If you choose to mail your cards for an appraisal, we will evaluate your cards for FREE still. If you choose not to sell the cards, we'll ship them back with shipping fees paid by us!  We can offer our FedEx account with 2-day shipping, fully insured, all covered by us. Simply contact the office to set up this option.

OUR BUYING PHILOSOPHY

We've run into a wide range of people and collections over the last 25 years. Although Just Collect is known for buying vintage sports cards and especially vintage baseball cards, we are also extremely interested in buying non-sports cards, too!
