A long-time collector of baseball cards decided it was time to sell his collection. Pulled from binders in the basement came vintage cards from the 1950's and 1960's highlighted multiple Mickey Mantle cards. So many cards of the Mick that we were blown away!

MULTIPLE MICKEY MANTLE COLLECTION

Mickey Mantle was one of the greatest baseball players ever to play the game. When The Mick retired from baseball on March 1st, 1969, his 536 career home runs were third all-time. Only Babe Ruth and Willie Mays had more homers in their careers than Mantle after his final season. From 1951-1968, Mantle played in 20 All-Star games, won 7 World Series championships, earned 3 MVP awards, and even won the triple crown by leading the league in average, home runs, and RBI in 1956. Mantle did this all playing under the bright lights in the big City; he was the star for the New York Yankees. Among baseball collectors, few other cards bring as much love, and value, than a Mickey Mantle.

This collection contains MULTIPLE cards of Mickey Mantle. In total, 20 different Mantle cards are here! You can see each Mick in the photos above. In order, you will find:

  • 1954 Bowman -the first card you see on the top left is from this '54 Bowman. This is a key card for a Mantle collector as Bowman secured the exclusive rights to print Mantle cards that season and Topps did not. If you want a '54 Mick, you will need the Bowman. Something unique about this card is Mantle is in the Yankees away jersey - no pinstripes!
  • 1957 Topps with a beautiful color photo of Mantle taking a swing.
  • 1956 Topps in a great horizontal design, the year Mantle won the Triple Crown.
  • 1958 Topps where Mantle stares away from the camera. What do you think was on Mickey's mind here?
  • 1959 Topps has a circular cutout; one of the more interesting designs for a card.
  • 1960 Topps produced with the multi-color design that stands out nicely.
  • 1962 Topps and the wood boarder is graded by PSA as a 5.5.
  • 1963 Topps with shades of the '58 and the circular shape with Mantle inside on the bottom right.
  • 1964 Topps shows Mantle not wearing any batting gloves like most players today do.
  • 1965 Topps contains a pennant with the Yankees tame name waving on the bottom left.
  • 1966 Topps and Mantle perhaps taking some cuts in the batting cage.
  • 1967 Topps depicts the "grizzled veteran" but believe it or not, Mantle is only 35 here.
  • 1968 Topps is the last card released of Mantle from his playing days.
  • 1969 Topps ended up being the last in line after Mantle retired before the season began.

Mantle had plenty of special cards and inserts released from both Bowman and Topps during his career. Above you can see a 1953 Bowman card with Mantle, Yogi Berra, and Hank Bauer. The next four cards are the 1958  Topps All-Star (love those yellow stars in the background!), a 1961 Topps card honoring his MVP win, 1962 Topps All-Star, 1959 Topps All-Star graded PSA 5, and a 1960 Topps Rival All-Stars card with Ken Boyer graded by SGC. While Mantle steals the show on the card with him and Boyer, Ken Boyer had a great career; he made 11 All-Star teams, won 5 Gold Gloves, and MVP (1964) and beat Mantle's Yankees in the 1964 World Series.

All of the Mantle cards were part of a vintage collection that has cards from Bowman and Topps spanning from the 1940's to the 1960's. Like you may have done as a kid, the owner placed his cards in pages and then into a binder. Using pages and binders is of the great ways to safely store your collection. Here are the binders the Mantle cards were stored in and a few of the vintage cards found inside. Each card below is a New York Yankee.

THE STORY AND FINDER'S FEE

These cards were owned by a collector named Jeff. After collecting and buying cards for years, Jeff felt it was time to sell his collection. Another collector, Antonio D., has purchased and sold many cards from us here at Just Collect as well as our sister company, Vintage BreaksKnowing that we offer a free appraisal and many options to review collections, Antonio referred Jeff to Just Collect.

Jeff spoke with our Vice President, John, who is a vintage card specialist. After reviewing images of the cards, John was blown away by the amount of Mickey Mantle cards. When speaking to Jeff, we learned he wanted to ship his collection to our office here in Millburn, NJ., for a proper evaluation. Before sending the cards for an evaluation, Jeff had a price in mind he was looking to receive for his collection. After adding the value of each card, the total amount was around $5,000 less than Jeff hoped for. When we told him about the value of the collection and the offer we wanted to make, Jeff said he had other cards to include in the collection he wanted to sell! Jeff had 20 different Mickey Mantle cards, but still had more cards he wanted to pass along to new collectors to appreciate. At Just Collect, we are always buying a variety of vintage cards - not just Mickey Mantle! Vintage cards, any from the Yankees, spanning from the 1940's to the 1960's were included in the sale now.

We love how collectors in the hobby look out for each other! Antonio met with Jeff to help remove the cards from the basement, package, box, and ship the cards out.

After carefully reviewing each Mickey Mantle, the vintage Yankee cards, and the remainder of Jeff's collection in-person, we made a fair offer that he accepted. We then paid Jeff how he wanted to be paid. When you sell your collection to Just Collect, we will pay you in cash, certified check, wire transfer - you name it!

After paying Jeff, we also sent a check out to Antonio! We wanted to thank Antonio for referring Jeff to us and helping him to understand the process. If you know anyone that is interested in a selling a collection, we'd be happy to pay YOU a finder's fee, too!
