1930's Goudey Cards Including Babe Ruth Owned by Goudey Employee Found

High-Grade Examples of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig as well as the rare Napoleon Lajoie Discovered by Grandchildren
  • May 17, 2022

Discovered in an attic, the grandchildren of a former Goudey Gum employee found vintage baseball cards in phenomenal condition. A collection of more than 150 cards from the 1930's has been unearthed that includes not only Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig but the rare Napoleon Lajoie card!

This story is the perfect example of why we tell you to always check Unexpected Places to find vintage cards. Grandchildren of a Goudey Gum employee opened a safe in the attic of their grandfather's home in Massachusetts. Inside the safe were two plastic cases contained over 150 cards from their grandpa's old job - 1933 Goudey baseball cards and 1934 Goudey baseball cards! Included in the treasure was Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and a very rare card from the 1933 Goudey set, the Napoleon Lajoie.

1933 GOUDEY BASEBALL CARDS

New call-to-action

In 1933, Goudey made a big gamble by releasing baseball cards during The Great Depression. Days when a family would struggle to afford even the essentials, having the money to purchase candy and baseball cards was be unheard of. Today, we’re thankful Goudey was able to pull off the feat as the 1933 set has become one of the most iconic baseball card sets of all-time. The cards are bigger in size ( 2-3/8" by 2-7/8") than other companies created at the time and feature beautiful, artistic images of players. In total there are FOUR Babe Ruth cards in the set, too. These Ruth cards are very desirable today. The checklist is loaded with other Hall of Famers like Lou Gehrig, Mel Ott, Jimmy Foxx, Eddie Collins, and Napoleon Lajoie. Speaking of Lajoie, sitting in card #106 this is card is not only a rare piece in the set but one of the more rare cards in the hobby! The set should have consisted of 240 cards but collectors noticed only 239 cards were produced. After noticing there was no card #106, collectors wrote to Goudey and in return received the Lajoie in the mail the following year. This is probably one of the top marketing ploys we’ve ever heard of: customers kept buying packs to find a card that was never printed. How rare is the Lajoie? For comparison, the PSA population report has only 96 graded copies of Lajoie while card 144 of Babe Ruth has 1,544 graded copies.

1934 GOUDEY BASEBALL CARDS

New call-to-action

Goudey cut the checklist down to just 96 cards in 1934 but with that comes a better chance a finding a Hall of Fame player. Of the 96 cards, 19 feature a player in the Baseball Hall of Fame! Lou Gehrig is also a prominent fixture of the set by having two cards produced but also having a “Lou Gehrig Says…” banner on the front 86/96 cards along with a blurb on the reverse authored by The Iron Horse himself. Gehrig had himself a fine season in 1934 by winning the Triple Crown; Lou hit .363 with 49 home runs and 166 RBI. Believe it or not, Gehrig did NOT win the MVP despite the Triple Crown losing out to Mickey Cochrane.

GOUDEY ATTIC DISOVERY

New call-to-action

After the grandchildren of a former employee at Goudey sorted out the cards found in the attic, over 150 Goudey cards from 1933 and 1934 were tallied up including:

  • 2 1933 Babe Ruth
  • 1 1933 Lou Gehrig
  • 2 1934 Lou Gehrig
  • 2 1933 Napoleon Lajoie

You can see a video of the cards HERE.

If you have found or inherited vintage cards that you’re considering selling, we are buying! Your local card shop is generally not well equipped to appraise or purchase vintage collections like this unless they have vintage expertise on staff like we do. The retail stores are focused on selling modern products and simply don't have the time or the knowledge to carefully evaluate vintage collections. This is where we are happy to help you. We have purchased many vintage Goudey collections with Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig cards like the 1930’s Goudey Name Tag Collection.
