A 1961 Fleer Wilt Chamberlain and a 1960 Topps Mickey Mantle card were part of a collection built by a brother and sister as kids for bonding. Just Collect proudly purchased the collection. Wait until you see how the cards were stored.

Clark checked Google for where to sell my vintage baseball and basketball cards. Like many, Clark found us here at Just Collect. After reaching out, we were delighted to hear the backstory about the cards!

Growing up, Clark loved baseball cards, and his sister loved basketball cards. Their dad would buy packs from stores and thus began the brother-sister bonding. Deciding it was time for someone else to cherish these treasures, Clark worked with us here at Just Collect to sell his collection. As we opened the box, we were stunned at what he and his sister owned as kids!

THE COLLECTION

Clark's sister owned several cards from the 1961 Fleer basketball set. Today, you'll find dozens of new basketball cards sets released each year. However, in the 1950's and 60's, that idea wasn't existent! There were zero main basketball card sets released after 1948 Bowman until 1957 Topps, and then none again until this 1961 Fleer set. The key card in 1961 Fleer is the Wilt Chamberlain rookie card. When Chamberlain retired, he owned 4 NBA MVP awards (1960, 1966, 1967, and 1968) and won 2 championships (1967, 1972).  In the first photo below, you can see the Wilt card right in the center. In the second photo, you can see what the backs of the cards look like.

On the baseball side, Clark starts us off with several cards from the 1960 Topps baseball set. In the third photo, the key card is Mickey Mantle right in the center. Mantle won three MVP awards (1956, 1957, and 1962) as well as 7 World Series championships (1951-53, 1956, 1958, 1961-62).  From the same set is an All-Star card of Mantle (right above the main card), as well as other legends including Hank Aaron and Roberto Clemente

The third photo includes vintage baseball cards with nine Nellie Fox cards. We didn't ask if Clark was a big Nellie fan, but it sure does look like it! The final two photos show more vintage baseball cards with names like Ernie Banks, Willie Mays, and Reggie Jackson. The vintage football cards include Hall of Famers and stars such as Bart Starr, Sonny Jurgenson, and a 1959 Tops rookie card of Alex Karras. You might recognize Karras as George Papadopolis from the TV show, Webster! Webster ran from 1983-89, probably when you were opening 30-cent wax packs of your own and chewing that gum.

APPRAISAL AND PURCHASE

Clark found us through a Google search. After sending us a message stating he had a 1961 Fleer Wilt Chamberlain and a 1960 Topps Mickey Mantle, our Vice President, John, reached out to Clark. From there, Clark took images of the top cards. John reviewed each image and then gave an estimated value based on the condition. The Wilt Chamberlain rookie card does have a stain on the back, which Clark knew ahead of time. The stain lowers the value, but the card is still very desirable.

In order to see the cards in-person, Clark used our fully-insured FedEx account and shipped the cards to our office here in Summit, NJ. We were surprised when the package came - all cards were stored in just a plain, white box that holds about 440 cards. No penny sleeves or top loaders like you see most collectors use today. We could tell this really was a childhood collection that Clark and his sister kept! These boxes are one way we suggest to safely store your collection. Did you store your cards in these boxes? We used three-ring binders and nine-pocket pages to complete our sets back in the 1980's.

Here is a video of the box arriving:

Clark asked us if we could buy EVERY card in the box; he didn't want to cherry pick out the big names. We were happy to purchase the entire box! After reviewing each card, John then made a fair offer to Clark which he accepted. We then paid Clark how he wanted to be paid! When you choose Just Collect to purchase your collection, we can pay you in cash, company check, or wire transfer.

We're glad Clark found us through a Google search. The retail stores are focused on selling modern products and simply don't have the time or the knowledge to carefully evaluate vintage collections like this. This is where we are happy to help you! We have purchased thousands upon thousands of collections and bought and sold over 50 MILLION dollars in cards. Clark told us he's going to use them money to give to his grandkids!
