Sealed 1910s Sweet Caporal Cigarettes Sold with Possible T206 Cards

Full Carton has 12 Packs of Cigarettes with Possible T206 Cards Inside!

One of the rarest unopened items has been sold at auction this week! A full carton of Sweet Caporal cigarettes, 12 packs, each possibly holding a T206 card that has never seen the light of day in over 100 years.

The most valuable and famous sports card ever calls the 1909-11 T206 set home - THE Honus Wagner card. Could there exist a pack-fresh Wagner card that has never been seen in over 100 years? There might be!

Between 1909 and 1911, various brands of tobacco companies placed a baseball card inside of their products. In total, 16 different brands of tobacco included a baseball card in their products. One of those brands was Sweet Caporal. Of the 50 to 75 estimated authentic Wagner cards known in our hobby, the majority of those came from Sweet Caporal cigarettes.

On June 20th, Goldin auctioned off an entire carton of sealed Sweet Caporal cigarettes containing 12 packs from the 1910s. It is possible that there are no T206 cards in any of the packs. There could be nothing inside the cigarette packs, an advertisement, a T59 Flags of All Nations card, or - best case - there could be a T206 card fresh as the day it was placed inside that pack over a century ago.

The final price was $68,320 - a big gamble if there are no cards inside. However, if the stars were to align and a Wagner was inside, the value would be well into MILLIONS of dollars. Goldin recently discovered and auctioned a Wagner with a Sweet Caporal back that was graded a PSA 1 for $5.1 million dollars. PSA grades cards on a scale from 1 to 10 with 10 being Gem Mint Perfect. If a PSA 1 is valued at over $5 million, imagine the value of a card with such provenance as pack-fresh.
