Not one, but TWO Babe Ruth cards were purchased in this fantastic vintage collection! Cards from the 1929 R316 Kashin set, 1947-66 Exhibits, and team-issued set cards from the 1960s with Hall of Famers galore are now shown publicly for the first time.

A gentleman named Michael reached out via our form from Colorado. From the first line, we knew this collection would be special: "I have 38 Kashin cards including 2 of Babe Ruth."

THE COLLECTION

1929 Kashin R316

In 1929, Kashin Publications released a baseball card set totaling 101 cards. Like releases today, the cards were released into four different series. The set is officially called R316 and each card measures 3.5" x 4.5", larger than today's standard card size of 2.5" x 3.5".  Each series of cards was placed inside of a small, colorful cardboard box rather than a wax pack. The original price tag for 25 or so cards in a box: a whopping 25-cents. The BEST part about these Kashin cards - every box had a Babe Ruth card! 

Kashin knew how to get customers to buy a box; include The Babe in every one. The 7-time World Series champion who slugged 714 career home runs between the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, and Boston Braves was still the best player in the game in 1929. In that season, Ruth hit 46 home runs and had a batting average of .345. The Yankees were fresh off a World Series win in 1928, too.

As you view the photos below, you can see Kashin cards feature a black and white image of the player on the front along with a  facsimile signature. The backs of a Kashin card are blank; quite different from the stats and bios you see on modern cards.

Michael inherited these cards from his father. Along with the Kashin cards, Michael's father collected another vintage set we love: 1947-66 Exhibits. 

1947-66 Exhibits

Exhibit Supply Company in Chicago, IL, distributed a set for 20 YEARS! From 1947-66, Exhibits were released in packs of 5 cards. Imagine trying to complete a set released over two decades! These cards are much larger than a standard card today; Exhibits measure 3-3/8" x 5-3/8". Like the Kashin cards, the Exhibits have a black and white image on the front with a blank back. Hall of Famers such as Duke Snider, Harmon Killebrew, and Burdette are in the collection. You can see the Exhibit cards in the third photo below. 

Team-Issued Sets

In the 5th and 6th photos below are team-issued cards. Remember going to a baseball game and receiving a team set of cards? Below are cards from 1961 from the Minnesota Twins and Philadelphia Phillies (4"x5") and 1965 photocards from the St. Louis Cardinals (3-1/4" x 5-1/2").

APPRAISAL AND PURCHASE

Our vintage card specialist, Dan, reviewed Michael's message. As Michael already attached images with the appraisal form, Dan was able to provide an evaluation for the key cards. Just Collect is very familiar with these sets - we have previously purchased 1929 Kashin cards with the original boxes! The retail stores are focused on selling modern products and simply don't have the time or the knowledge to carefully evaluate vintage collections like Michael's. Happy with the evaluation and initial offer, Michael used our fully-insured, two-day FedEx Express account to ship the cards to our office so we could evaluate the cards in-person. After receiving the collection, the cards were carefully inspected for condition. As you know, condition is very important when determining the value of your cards! A day later, Dan had the final evaluation and offer ready. He called Michael and went over the final evaluation and offer. He thought the offer was very fair and accepted. We then sent Michael a company check via FedEx.
