Original boxes of Jell-O from 1963 with the baseball cards on the back! Discovered in The Nebraska Collection, these unique cards were purchased from Uncle Curtis, the man who never stopped collecting.
A few months ago, we travelled to Nebraska where we met Uncle Curtis, a man with a massive collection that hadn't seen the light of day in decades. We proudly purchased The Nebraska Collection for $77,000! The collection included many premiums, main-in items, and food-issued sets including collectables and cards from Babe Ruth and Mickey Mantle. In the collection was this incredible run of 1963 Jell-O cards!
Remember making Jell-O? Boil the water, add the powder, add cold water, and let it chill. We still call the Jell-O by color and not flavor. Lime Jell-O? No, thank you, it's Green Jell-O. In 1963, Jell-O included one baseball card on the back of their boxes. Each card is 2 1/2" x 3 3/8" and in total, 200 cards make up the set. Stars include Mantle, Hank Aaron, Roberto Clemente, Ernie Banks, Bob Gibson, and more!
Like other food-issue releases, you were supposed to cut the card out from the back of the Jell-O box after you made the snack. Uncle Curtis did cut out many of the baseball cards, but he was so far ahead of his time when collecting, he kept uncut boxes!
You can see the 1963 Jell-O cards in the photos below. The first two pictures show in-tact boxes with the cards on the back. Jim Gilliam is on the strawberry box in the bottom right. Gilliam was a four-time World Series champion, a two-time all-star, won Rookie of the Year in 1953, and his number 19 is retired by the Dodgers. The box of Jell-O is now 62-years-old and is still holding a card, uncut; such a great piece of collecting history here!
The first two photos are of uncut boxes. In the third photo are a few highlights from key players in the set. The cards have been cut from the boxes and feature absolute legends of baseball. There are duplicates, too, as you see a pair of Ernie Banks cards, two each of Joe Torre, Bob Gibson, and Gil Hodges. Uncle Curtis shares his story in the fifth photo with our owner, Leighton, and a glimpse into ALL of the cards Curtis was interested in selling to Just Collect.
