1933 Goudey #92 Lou Gehrig SGC 60

The blue background is vivid, the iconic pinstripes are clearly visible and the standard-bearer, never-changing New York Yankees cap crowning baseball immortal Lou Gehrig all make his 1933 Goudey #92 baseball card one of the most appealing and popular in the history of card collecting. Everett Scott and Enos Goudey may be long forgotten names in baseball and card collecting lore, but we owe much to both of these gentlemen when considering the sport and the hobby.  Enos founded a bubble gum manufacturing company in Boston in 1919, and in 1933, became the first gum maker to issue baseball cards with his confectionary treat. Without ol’ Enos, this card wouldn’t be.  Everett Scott played for the Yanks prior to Gehrig, and on August 17, 1933, it was Everett’s consecutive game record which “Unser Lou” broke to become the “Iron Man of major league baseball (until someone named Ripken came along).

Goudey issued two identical cards of the “Ironman” and their specific reasons are unknown, Lou’s tremendous production and longevity may have had a lot to do with their decision.  Gehrig out “slugged” teammate Babe Ruth in 1933, with a .605 slugging percentage, and batted .334 that season.  Leading up to ( and including) ’33, Gehrig’s runs batted in numbers read 175, 142, 126, 142, 184, 151 and 139.  Not bad for a player considered to have succeeded “in the shadow” of a fellow Hall of Famer and legend. Number 92’s “classmate” in the initial Goudey card set, card #160, is very scarce, especially in high grades.  92 is not all that plentiful in quality ratings either, though, and is a “must” on many collector want lists. Two of the major third party grading firms show over 1,000 total #92 Gehrigs have been graded, with less than 30, or just 2 %, earning the upper grades. Collectors can add a spectacular version of the 1933 Goudey debut set #92, graded by SGC at 60, right now from Just Collect  Just Collect is always buying Lou Gehrig cards, and 1933 Goudey baseball cards.  Please click here for more information about selling your cards to Just Collect.
