If you’re looking for something really old—and really different—check out our 1939-40 O-Pee-Chee V301-1 Eddie Shore card up for bid this week. The ’39 OPC issue has quite an air of mystery to it.  The cards are called OPC, but no one has really confirmed that the company that eventually became a Topps partner printed them. Cards?  Well, yes, they’re cataloged that way but they’re 5x7 size, printed in black and white with no stats on the back. Still, for  collectors it’s hard to find a cooler old time hockey set than this one.  Few have ever tried to chase down a quality set.  In fact, there are only two complete sets listed on the PSA Set Registry and fewer than a half dozen real attempts.  The cards are numbered in the lower right corner and many picture the players in suits and ties rather than a uniform. Eddie Shore, of course, was one of the greatest, toughest players of all-time.  Best known as a Boston Bruins’ defenseman, Shore won the Hart Trophy as the league's MVP four times, more than any defenseman in history and only Wayne Gretzky and Gordie Howe won more times overall. The card we’re offering has been graded PSA 2 but looks much nicer than its technical grade.  Vintage hockey cards of Hall of Famers are still very underrated and with attention off the sport due to the lockout, it might be time to take a strong look at adding a rare classic like this to your collection. We’re always looking for pre-War cards, especially those of Hall of Famers.  If you’re in need of quick holiday cash, let us know and if we can use what you have, we’ll get a check to you ASAP.
