The 1955 Topps Roberto Clemente rookie card is simply one of the most important, most sought after post-World War II baseball cards in the hobby. Not only does it represent one of the 20th century’s most beloved players whose life was tragically cut short, it’s also one of the key cards in the ’55 set, and one of the most beautiful Topps cards ever produced. Collectors need his card to fill out their set but others are simply Clemente collectors or those who chase vintage rookie cards of Hall of Fame players.
The ’55 Topps Clemente can be found with nice corners but finding a centered copy from this tough high number card is a challenge. This week, we’re seeing strong action on a beautiful SGC 70 example of the Clemente that is well centered and aesthetically pleasing to even the most discriminating collector. Bidding shot past $1,000 pretty quickly and we’re not surprised. This card represents Clemente in his early days in the big leagues—a remarkably talented young player who would become a legend. Clemente’s brilliance came both at bat and in the field. He would become a Hall of Famer eventually, overcoming cultural differences and prejudice when players of color were still rare on some rosters. Before his career—and life—ended at age 38 in late 1972, Clemente owned four National League batting titles and 3,000 hits. He won the NL MVP in 1966 and in ’71, he hit .414 for the Pirates in the World Series. Earlier this year, the lone PSA 10-graded Clemente rookie sold for more than $432,000. This one won’t cost nearly that much and it’ll still be a great looking addition to your collection!
