How many kids had this card taped to their bedroom wall during the magical summer of 1961?  Plenty.  While Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle chased Babe Ruth’s single-season home run record, kids opened packs of 1961 Topps baseball cards, hoping to pull one of their cards.  Their fondness for the shy slugger from North Dakota, and propensity for handling his card, tacking it up on a wall or just turning it over and over looking at the back and imagining what it was like to see him in person are why so few nice copies exist. Fear not, high grade collector. We have one of the finest 1961 Topps Roger Maris cards in existence up for bid this week.  It’s a beautiful PSA 8.5, one of the 25 best ever graded by the company. Maris cards remain ultra-popular and we’re big fans of cards that were issued during milestone seasons.  They capture a player at his peak of fame. This particular issue came just three seasons after his first appearance on a Topps card and he’d continue to be a fixture through the 1968 season. The card has very nice corners and is reasonably well centered as well. Bidding is already strong and whether you’re a Maris fan, high grade star collector, 1961 Topps collector or baseball history buff, this card is an excellent fit.  We’re anxious to see where the market is right now since so few high grade examples come up for bid.
