1929 R316 Kashin Babe Ruth

From Trash to Cash

Destined for the garbage heap, a grandson noticed his grandfather's old baseball cards and saved them.  Smart thinking and some research turned this small collection of 1929 Kashin cards into a tidy sum.  Obviously, there has to be a reason that this collection was saved and it is probably because most people recognize Babe Ruth and accordingly, associate Ruth cards with having monetary value.  In most cases, this assumption is correct.

We've had a few collections that were earmarked for the trash can, but luckily were saved by prudent thinkers that found Just Collect and turned the trash into cash!

1929 R316 Kashin Publishing Lou Gehrig

What's a Kashin?

The Roaring Twenties were ending and the country was just months away from the onset of The Great Depression.  It was the spring of 1929 and Kashin Publications released a baseball set consisting of 101 subjects.  This issue paralleled their Movie Stars set.  While there are not a lot of details with regard to the history of the set, collectors who liked the 1927 New York Yankees found that team is represented quite well as in addition to Babe Ruth, the majority of Muderer's Row was featured including Lou Gehrig, Earle Combs and Mark Koenig as well as hurlers Waite Hoyt and Herb Pennock. The set is loaded with Hall of Famers such as Rogers Hornsby, Mel Ott, Bill Terry, Lefty Grove, Jimmie Foxx, Frank Frisch, Pie Traynor, Paul Waner and many others.

Identified in the American Card Catalog as R316, the Kashin Publishing issue is printed in black and white on a thin, paper stock and typically measure 3 1/2 x 4 1/2 with blank backs.

Its Raining Ruths

Babe Ruth seems to be popping up in a lot of collection that we're seeing, lately.  We'll be posting more blog stories in the new future about a few more Ruth cards that we've purchased, but much like the foursome that we bought a year ago, it seems to be raining Ruths all around.  In fact, one scrapbook collection that we picked up awhile back included plenty of Goudey Ruths as well as a complete Kashin set!

We could explain the backstory, but it just sounds so much better sharing the story in the seller's own words:

"These baseball cards were found / saved at my mother's house while we were moving her to her new home. I noticed a plastic bag with packs of cards in it that was meant for the garbage. While viewing the cards I noticed 3 Babe Ruths and a Lou Gehrig. I knew I couldn't let these be thrown away so I consulted my mother. Apparently, these were her father's baseball cards. He was born and raised in Philadelphia in 1920 and died in 1966. My mother suggested that I take a them and sell them if I desired.

After browsing the Internet for awhile I came across your JustCollect.com website and sent an email with a few pics of what I had found and within no time, I was talking to you on our next steps on how to proceed. The process was easy, informative and very accommodating. I could not be happier!"

As one story has it, Kashin's were released initially in a format that provided 100 different cards, but they apparently found them difficult to sell.  They subsequently released 4 different retail boxes each containing 25 cards and printed with a specific color variation (Orange, Blue, Coral and Canary) and they added Babe Ruth, the most popular player in baseball, to the set and included him in each of the four retail boxes.  To make room for Ruth in each of the boxes, Kashin removed four players from the issue and while they were issued previously, they became shortprints and did not make the checklists included on the reverse of each of the 4 retail boxes.  The four players:  Bump Hadley, Jesse Haines, Harry Seibold, and Phil Todt were replaced with Babe Ruth.
