Derek Jeter 1993 SP Foil Rookie PSA 9

Precious Metal – Perfect Debut Design for “The Captain”
  • September 12, 2014

Economies of nations were backed by precious metals for several centuries. Silver was prominent among those highly valued metals. It’s no coincidence, that SP debuted their 1993 rookie card of “The Captain”, Derek Jeter, by using a silver foil background to introduce the now-legendary Bronx Bomber to the hobby. SP re-introduced the “Silver Standard” within the economy of baseball cards, and any investment in this “precious” card is rewarding, as the market for high grade examples has been trending upwards for some time now – with no end seemingly in sight. What makes this card so desirable in high grade? Think about this - over 11,000 examples of this card have been submitted to PSA for grading – and ONLY 14 have received the preeminent PSA 10 designation! That’s one-tenth of 1%! SGC reports that they have yet to find one earning the loftiest grade. Even PSA 9 examples are extremely hard to find, as less than 5% of the total population has reached the Mint threshold – which is unheard of for a “modern” card.

We are proud to offer this recently acquired, PSA 9 MINT condition SP rookie card of Jeter via our eBay auctions. When one considers the impediments and obstacles of in finding a foil front, borderless card in high grade, this one clamors for a place in your collection.

The Yankees were emerging from a lull in post-season and championship seasons when Jeter first came up 1995, after doing his minor league time at Greensboro, Tampa, Albany and Columbus. In the twenty-one plus years since his MLB debut, the Yanks have advanced to the post-season every year except 2013. They have also won five out of seven World Series they have appeared in, and re-introduced a “Silver Standard” of their own in New York, the AL East, and across the American League. Jeter himself, by his incredible performance, has elevated himself to one of the finest shortstops ever to play the game. The Captain of the red, white and blue clad Bombers has also been awarded five SILVER Slugger awards, five Gold Gloves, eclipsed the 3,000 hit mark, been elected to the AL All-Star team 14 times (with an All-Star Game MVP in 2000), and was the AL Rookie of the Year in 1996. Derek’s earnings consistently show him in the top 10 salaries in MLB, attesting to his value to his team and the game of baseball. Interestingly, Jeter was paid a $10,000 bonus during his ROY 1996 season, which today might be enough to open an auction for one of his higher condition SP Rookie cards. Market trends mentioned earlier show that a 1993 “Jeets” silver-standard rookie at the grade of 8.5 demand sales prices in the hundreds, while the elusive “9’s” bear market values rising north in the thousands. A recent Gem Mint version sold for close to four times Jeter’s initial $10,000 ROY bonus! Take a close look, and examine this card… sharp corners and colors that are just blazing on its printing - almost as if you’re there next to him on second base bag ready to grab his toss for the putout! It’s free of surface flaws, which is remarkable for a card with silver foil that goes right up to its edges. With two additional photos of Jeter on the obverse, it’s chip-free with imagery and overall registration that shines in the upper echelon of all of his rookies approved and authenticated by professional grading.
