When Dr. Thomas Newman passed away in January of this year, he left his family one of the most valuable sports card collections ever known. One card the late Doctor owned may very well break the record for most expensive card EVER. Take a look at what's about to hit the market.
Dr. Thomas Newman was a neurologist by day, and sports card collector by night. For over 40 years, Dr. Newman collected cards, and even traveled every Summer to the National show. After passing away in January at the age of 73, the doctor left his family his collection of cards - and what a collection it is. The total value is estimated to be worth 20 MILLION dollars. There's even a chance that one card of Dr. Newman's may set a new record as most expensive card of all-time.
THE MOST EXPENSIVE CARD OF ALL-TIME
We recently told you that the record for most expensive card sale has been broken FIVE times in the last year or so. Currently, the record is a tie between two cards with a price tag of 5.2 million dollars.
We speculated that a PSA 10 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle could be the next card to top the record for highest sales price; there are just three known copies. If a PSA 9 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle card sold for 5.2 million dollars, a PSA 10 would crush it. Before any of the three PSA 10 Mantles surfaced, a different card has emerged to be the next record breaker. Say hello to Dr. Thomas Newman's PSA 9 1933 Goudey Babe Ruth!
WILL THE BABE BREAK THE RECORD?
A PSA 9 1933 Goudey Babe Ruth card #53. The 1933 Goudey set has four different Babe Ruth cards. Card number 53 with the yellow background is the most elusive of the Ruth cards.
If you're not familiar with card grading , the leader in the industry is PSA. Grading on a sale from 1 to 10, the PSA population report shows us that no 1933 Goudey Babe Ruth cards were ever given a grad of 10. There is just ONE copy ever given a grad of 9; you're looking at it.
There is a lot of industry buzz indicating this Babe Ruth card will top the Mickey Mantle and LeBron James rookies for most expensive card ever. Wish we were able to go on a few of those Summer trips with the doc; could you imagine?
