Jackie Robinson and Satchel Paige autographs helped buy a new bride her wedding dress! Just Collect proudly purchased a collection of autographs featuring some of baseball's greatest players, and the money went to a wonderful cause.
Jaqui and her fiancé are getting ready for the big day! The happy couple was prepping for their wedding, but beforehand, Jaqui was helping her future father-in-law clean out the garage. When her future father-in-law was a kid, he and his dad would attend baseball games. Along came index cards so he could collect autographs at the entrances and exits of the fields. The chase was the best part! Eventually, the young man began sending out index cards through the mail for players to sign. The autograph collection grew and after awhile, he opened up a Hobby Shop. When it came time to retire, the autographs were boxed up and stored in the garage.
As Jaqui began cleaning the garage, she found boxes of Americana memorabilia, sports memorabilia and signed index cards sporting beautiful, bold signatures of Jackie Robinson, Satchel Paige, Lefty Gomez, Dizzy Dean, and more!
Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier on his way to a historic career. Winning the Rookie of the Year award in 1947 and MVP award in 1949, Robinson also led the Brooklyn Dodgers to a World Series victory in 1955. The six-time All-Star was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962. Robinson was a hero on and off the field.
How good was Satchel Paige? After Jackie broke the color barrier, Paige made his MLB debut at the age of 42. My back hurts getting off the couch now, and Paige was throwing fastballs by baseball's best at this age. Paige promptly won the World Series in 1948, made two All-Star teams (1952 and 1953), and even pitched in a game at the age of 58 in 1965. Paige was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972.
Dizzy Dean won the 1934 MVP and led the league in strikeouts eight times before being inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1953. Lefty Gomez won the pitching triple crown twice by leading the league in wins, strikeouts, and ERA. The seven-time All-Star won five World Series championships and was inducted into the HOF in 1972.
Do you remember sending index cards or baseball cards to players in the mail? We remember the excitement when those envelopes came back to us! To this day, we remember the address of Yankee Stadium by heart after writing many fan letters to our favorite players.
In the slide show below, you can see the wonderful penmanship of Jackie Robinson in the first two images and Satchel Paige on the next two images. Final two images are autographs of various players and managers that Jaqui's future father-in-law met over the years.
Jaqui's future father-in-law tasked her with handling the autographs and selling parts of the collection for him. After a quick search on Google, Jaqui found our Just Collect website and read that we offer a . Your local card shop is generally not well equipped to appraise or purchase autograph collections like this. The retail stores are focused on selling modern products and simply don't have the time or the knowledge to carefully evaluate a collection like this. This is where we are happy to help you. We have purchased many collections autographs including a baseball signed by both Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig that was once owned by their Yankees teammate! You can see the story and baseball HERE. We specialize in purchasing vintage cards, too, especially Jackie Robinson cards. Just Collect traveled from New Jersey to California to purchase THREE Jackie Robinson rookie cards that you can read about HERE.
Jaqui was nearby our office in New Jersey, and opted to come visit our store with the signatures for us to review. To ensure authentication on the autographs, we sent the autographs of Jackie Robinson and Satchel Paige to PSA. Not only does PSA grade cards, they are one of the top autograph authenticators in the hobby.
After the autographs returned from PSA and were deemed authentic, we made a fair offer to Jaqui for ALL of the autographs that she accepted. We then paid Jaqui how she wanted to be paid. When you sell your collection to Just Collect, we can pay you in cash, company check, or wire transfer.
For the wedding! When Jaqui told her fiancé and and future father-in-law about selling the autographs, they told her to use the money to upgrade her wedding dress. We couldn't be more thrilled to help the bride look stunning on her big day.
