SGC Returned 1954 Topps Hank Aaron Rookie Card as Too Brittle to Grade

Have You Ever Had a Card Returned from Grading as Too Brittle to Grade?

Too brittle? This was a unique experience for us! Just Collect sent a 1954 Topps Hank Aaron rookie card in for grading and the card was returned, ungraded, deemed too brittle to grade. We show you the card, the return, and ask - has this happened to you?

We have purchased many 1954 Topps Hank Aaron rookie cards in our 20 years in business here at Just Collect. As one of the country's top buyers of vintage cards, we are always purchasing this iconic piece of history! Aaron was known for hitting 755 career home runs, being named to 25 All-Star teams, and delivering his Braves a World Series championship in 1957. The Hammer also racked up 3,771 hits and 2,297 RBI, the latter a record which still stands today. Just Collect rarely says no when an Aaron rookie is for sale!

Recently, we purchased an Aaron rookie that is in what we like to call "collector grade."  This card had been around the block! Maybe the card was put in bike spokes back in 1954, or used in a game of flip too many times. Before sending this card out for grading, we knew the card would not receive a numerical grade. Rather than the standard grade of 1 to 10 with 10 being gem mint, this card would most likely have been graded authentic; there is too much damage on the card to receive a proper number. This card was sent to SGC grading, and when the card returned, we were a little surprised!

Too brittle?

SGC could not grade the card at all; they stated the card was too brittle to handle and assign a grade to. Interesting!

Here is a video of our owner, Leighton, explaining the situation and showing the card:

The "NO" grade. It happens! We're not upset about the grade, but surprised we didn't get an Authentic. This is a rare return! Have you ever had a card receive such a designation when sending in a vintage card?

Just Collect purchased The Once Bitten Collection with a 1933 Goudey Babe Ruth card that had a corner missing! This card was graded authentic rather than too brittle to grade. While cards of this condition are worth substantially less than cards of better condition, we're still talking about Hank Aaron and Babe Ruth; these cards are still valuable!

We keep a LIST of card shows we'll be attending. Come stop by the Just Collect table and chat.

If you're near New York City and would like to meet in a public place, our owner, Leighton, would be happy to meet you; read all the information here.

  • SHIP your collection

If you choose to mail your cards for an appraisal, we will evaluate your cards for FREE still. If you choose not to sell the cards, we'll ship them back shipping fees paid by us!
