The 1957 Topps Hank Aaron Error Card - The Hammer is Left-Handed

Hank Aaron Wasn't Left-Handed, Was He? Only on the 1957 Topps Card!
  • June 20, 2025

Did you know there is a Hank Aaron error card? How in the world did quality control miss this one?! Let's take a closer look at the 1957 Topps Hank Aaron error.

Hank Aaron is one of the greatest baseball players ever to stop onto the field. When "The Hammer" retired, he was the all-time leader in home runs with 755. Aaron hit more dingers than Babe Ruth! Far more than a power hitter, Aaron could have nit ZERO home runs and still had more than 3,000 career hits. A two-time batting champion and three-time Gold Glove winner, Aaron really could do it all on the field - and did so as a right-handed player, right? Not in the 1957 Topps baseball card set!

In 1957, Topps released a 407-card set in the standard size of 2.5" x 3.5". Most notable about the set is that for the first time, Topps began using this "standard" size! Cards you open today from a pack of Topps baseball cards are 2.5" x 3.5", but this was not always the case. The 1952 Topps baseball card set is bigger in size coming in at 2-5/8" x 3-3/4" as are sets such as 1954 Topps and 1956 Topps. The 1957 Topps set is filled with star players including Mickey Mantle, Roberto Clemente, Willie Mays, and of course, Hank Aaron.

Hank is ...left-handed?

Hank Aaron is really right-handed, but Topps had a reverse negative issue!

The 1957 season was one of Aaron's best, too. The Hammer won the MVP award behind a .344 average, 44 home runs, 132 RBI, and finished off the year with a World Series championship When we look back on a card of Aaron in such a season - his picture is reversed! It's not as if Aaron had a bad season in 1956 and would have been missed by Topps in a quality control check. Aaron won the batting title in 1956!

There is no corrected version of the 1957 Topps Hank Aaron card, so while this is an error, the mistake does not increase the value like we have seen in other corrected error cards. The 1990 Topps "No Name" Frank Thomas comes to mind as an error card that was corrected, making the error version more valuable.  However, the 1957 Topps Hank Aaron is still quite valuable! Checking the PSA population report, there have been 6,337 of the Aaron cards graded with zero cads have been graded Gem Mint 10! High-grade examples are valued at thousands of dollars. A PSA 7 on a scale from 1 to 10 is valued at $1,400 and a PSA 8 valued at $3,700.
