Vintage Topps Baseball Cards Purchased in the Obsession Collection

Written by Monte Jennings | Oct 1, 2021 2:27:49 AM

Remember spending hours opening packs of cards and trying to put entire set together?  We just had to get all of the cards in our sets, didn't we 😀  We recently met the wife a collector that was just as obsessed and passionate about building complete sets just like you and I still are.  Just Collect is proud to have purchased vintage Topps baseball cards in the Obsession Collection.

When you're building a set of baseball cards, you can't quit when you're down to those last few you need.  Each wax pack you open, looking for maybe card 397 Don Mattingly All-Star out of 1989 Topps or a more valuable card 360 Mickey Mantle in 1960 Topps, you're obsessed and passionate about finishing that set.  We are, too 😁   This is why were very excited to meet Kathleen and agree to purchase her husband's collection of vintage Topps baseball cards; he was just like you and I!

Don't forget about our sister company, Vintage Breaks, big event where you could win over $15,000 in prizes including a T206 Ty Cobb! Read about the Vintage Breaks Event

THE OBSESSION COLLECTION

Kathleen's husband would spend hours opening cases and packs of cards to complete his card sets. Kathleen, the kids, and even grandma at 90 years young would spend hours helping finding each card needed for a set.  When we called to inquiry about the collection, Kathleen said "Oh, you mean about my obsessed husband."  We love it!

1959 Topps and their beautiful, vibrant background are in the collection. This set has all the greats  - Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Ernie Banks, and of course Bob Gibson's rookie card. The '59's are in the top left:

1963 Topps features a rookie card of Pete Rose, the all-time MLB hits leader. You can see the Rose rookie, centered at the top:

1965 Topps is another favorite of ours, and offers rookies of Joe Morgan and Steve Carlton. Just look at the row of Hal of Famers from the '65 set at the bottom in this photo!  Lou Brock, Roberto Clemente, Willie Mays, and Hank Aaron all from the collection.  The same row also has a beautiful 1966 Topps Sandy Koufax between Lou Brock and Roberto Clemente:

Here is a stack of graded cards including 1953 Bowman (the black and white cards, top left), and 1962 Topps where you can see Yogi Berra on the bottom left.

We can tell this collection was handled with care; Kathleen's husband didn't put his treasures in the bike spokes back in the '50's and 60's!  Putting complete sets together in the 1950's and 1960's was no easy task.  Baseball cards were released in multiple series back then. The 1965 Topps set was released in SEVEN series! By the time the 7th series was on store shelves, you were already scooping up football packs as were watching the leaves turn colors in our front yard. Imagine going back to 1965 when you could buy a 12-card pack for dime, find your favorites, then go jump in a big pile of leaves your dad just raked up. Not going to lie; we'd do that right now if we didn't have to be the ones to rake the pile back up...
