Mickey Mantle, Jackie Robinson, and More Saved From Bicycle Spokes in The Noise Maker Collection

A young collector in the 1950s knew NOT to put his star cards in his bike spokes!

Remember back when you put baseball cards in your bicycle spokes?  You were king of the road when your bike sounded like a motorcycle!  If we only knew how valuable those cards would become...   A collector from Michigan was ahead of his time when choosing which cards he used in his bike by saving his star cards! Relive some fun memories and look at the Noise Maker collection that Just Collect recently had the privilege to purchase.

If you didn't put baseball cards in your bike spokes, you weren't cool, right?  You needed that bike nice and loud to sound like a motorcycle as you flew down the road to meet you friends at the ball field. While it was cool in the 50's, many kick themselves now realizing how valuable the cards have become today!  A collector in Michigan reached to me for a FREE appraisal after finding Just Collect on Google.  The Tigers fan put his cards in the bike spokes, too, but he was smart enough to not use his star cards!

THE COLLECTION

Between the ages of 8 and 12, the Tigers fan would mow lawns around town to save up enough money for packs of baseball cards.  In the 1950's and 60's, you could buy a pack of cards for a nickel.  Remember when we mowed lawns or shoveled snow for money?  I remember shoveling a driveway for hours and thinking the $5 reward was a fortune; that bought a lot of cards.  Wish five bucks went as far today as it did when we were kids. Wonder how many lawns or driveways we would have had to work in 1965 to go see the Beatles at Shea Stadium, home of the Mets, that August.

While most of his friends bought the cards at their local general store just for the gum, this smart collector wanted the cards - and the star cards!  When all of the kids were putting their baseball cards in bike spokes, this young collector knew he shouldn't start making noise with the likes of Mickey Mantle,  Jackie Robinson, Hank Aaron, Sandy Koufax, and other big names.

The "common" cards from baseball sets like 1956 Topps, 1962, or 1966 Topps were all used as the "noise makers."  Thankfully the collector held onto about 60 vintage cards that includes (in order of the photographs below):

  • (12) Mickey Mantles with Topps cards (top to bottom, left to right) from 1965, 1962, 1961, a 1954 Bowman, (2) 1961 MVP, 1962 All-Star, 1961 All-Star, and (3) from 1966.
  • (3) 1956 Topps Jackie Robinson
  • (1) 1956 Topps Sandy Koufax
  • (3) 1961 Topps Hank Aaron MVP
  • (3) 1966 Topps Pete Rose
  • (1) 1967 Topps Pete Rose
  • (1) 1967 Topps Carl Yastrzemski
  • (2) 1966 Topps Sandy Koufax
  • (1) 1961 Topps Carl Yastrzemski
  • (1) 1966 Topps Willie Mays
  • (1) 1962 Topps Robert Clemente
  • Various stars such as Ernie Banks, Whitey Ford, Warren Spahn, and more!

I can't believe so many stars were saved from bike spokes!  Multiple Mikey Mantles, Jackie Robinsons, and Hank Aarons!   Putting cards into bikes reminds me a lot when we FLIPPED cards as kids.  I also bought a collection of basketball cards that were won by flipping you can read about HERE.
